No restraining order will stop Dare from protecting Teal.

The blackouts started happening when Teal was eight. There are long periods of her youth she doesn't remember. She has woken up in strange places, feeling disoriented and unaware of how long she's been out.

After two years abroad attending a private school and sessions with a top-notch psychiatrist, she's been deemed cured. The blackouts have ceased, or so Teal thought, until she wakes up in a ditch back home in North Carolina. Dare, the man pulling her broken body from the wreckage, has a restraining order against him. He’s no longer the clean-cut boy she went frog gigging with but road-hardened. His lean, muscular arms, riddled with tats, drag her out of the SUV. She should fear him, but instead, his touch sparks memories that tell her she once worshipped him with all her heart.

New Adult Romantic Suspense.

Steamy psychological thriller for 18 and older

What would you do if you lost part of your memories?

Would you do anything to retrieve those memories?

What if those memories held some horrid truth that your mind has blocked out on purpose to protect you?

Would you still seek those memories out?

These are just some of the questions that are going through Teal Covington’s mind right now. Ten years ago at age 8, she wakes up in a swamp all scraped up, covered blood and has a split skull. Her 11 year old best friend Dare is by her side when she wakes up. She has no recollection of what happened that day in the swamp. As a result of the gash in her head, she has reoccurring blackouts now. Along with the memories from that day, she also lost all memories of her mother. With no one else to blame, her father accuses Dare of “touching” his daughter and presses charges against him.

After the incident in the swamp, her mom appears to have abandons her and her father. Her dad believes she went off to Paris to live out her dream as an artist. Her dad decides after everything that has happened to Teal, it would be best to get out of the town they’ve called home and move to Paris in hopes of finding her mother and convincing her to come home and in hopes of finding help for Teal with her reoccurring blackouts. Now 10 yrs later, still no memories have returned, no mom, and the doctors have deemed her “cured”. She has had minimal episodes of blackouts since moving. Now she is moving back to town with the swamp that haunts her nightmares to help out her aging grandmother, but really she wants to get her memories back. Little does she know, she was not the only one affected by that day. Dare has his own memories from that day. Upon Teal’s return, her blackouts come back full force. She is more determined than ever to figure out what happened that day in the swamp, so she seeks out Dare’s help. But does Dare want to help her after her dad accused him of touching her in the swamp that day?

In a search for her memories and in hopes of stopping the blackouts completely, Teal seeks out the one place she wants to forget forever. In doing so, she blackouts more and more and starts remembering bits and pieces of that day and memories of her mother. Can she handle digging up the past and live the consequences of getting those memories back? Some memories are left buried. Someone doesn’t want Teal to get those memories back and they will do anything to stop those memories from resurfacing. Why don’t they want those memories to return? What is there to hide from that day?

Who doesn’t love a good mystery?

I am usually not a “mystery” type of book reader, but let me tell you…I AM NOW! I was completely immersed in this book from the beginning! Each turned page, delved me deeper and deeper into the mystery that is Teal’s life. What is she not remembering?!?! And should she seek out those memories or leave them buried in the bog?!?!

I felt myself, very much like Teal, seeking out the answers! I wanted to know as badly as she did what happened 10 yrs ago at the swamp. I would stay up late at night reading and get up early to read a little bit more before my kids woke up…I needed answers!

The storyline and plot was great! I love all the twists and turns Chris Myers put into it to make everything and everyone so intertwined…true to the “small town” stereotype. “Everyone knows everyone’s business.” I personally grew up in a town of 800 people, so I know how that works. I am terrible at figuring out mysteries…hence the reason I typically don’t read mystery books, but this ending I did NOT see coming! I LOVE when authors can do that to their readers and Chris Myers did that in Blackout.

All in all, I really liked this book…BUT…I was a little disappointed in the “ending”. I loved everything up until the last 2 chapters. After the “breakthrough” in memories, it felt slightly rushed. Then we jump 2 yrs, things still seem unresolved and we still have unanswered questions. And then…THE END. WHAT?!?! I need more details! What happened with the one guy? What happened with the other guy? What happened with her mom? QUESTIONS! (I can’t list my other questions bc I don’t want any spoilers). I am really hopeful that maybe there’s another book to come out to answer some of my questions, but then again, maybe that’s part of the mystery…maybe that was Chris Myers intent…leaving me with some questions of my own. I will have to wait and see 😉

Blackout is packed full of mystery, passion, and it keeps you intrigued until the very end!
