This book can be read as a standalone.

A knight in tarnished armor is still a knight.

When you’re a defense attorney in Washington, DC, you see firsthand how hard life can be, and that sometimes the only way to survive is to be harder. I, Jake Becker, have a reputation for being cold, callous, and intimidating—and that suits me just fine. In fact, it’s necessary when I’m breaking down a witness on the stand.

Complications don’t work for me—I’m a “need-to-know” type of man. If you’re my client, tell me the basic facts. If you’re my date, stick to what will turn you on. I’m not a therapist or Prince Charming—and I don’t pretend to be.

Then Chelsea McQuaid and her six orphaned nieces and nephews came along and complicated the ever-loving hell out of my life. Now I'm going to Mommy & Me classes, One Direction concerts, the emergency room, and arguing cases in the principal's office.

Chelsea’s too sweet, too innocent, and too gorgeous for her own good. She tries to be tough, but she’s not. She needs someone to help her, defend her…and the kids.

And that — that, I know how to do.

5+++ stars review

Jenn’s review

I LOVED this book from the first sentence to its last! It is entertaining, wonderful and with lots of fun. I liked every single character except for this one douche bag…but luckily there is not much of him.

The story plot was good and with lots of quality in it. My heart was breaking at times but as you can see I survived 🙂 Writing was also very good and all credit to the author for that.

I would give this book 10 stars if that was possible! Can’t wait for audio to come out too. Now I have to read Overruled too….can’t get enough of this fun group of people!

Angy’s review

When an author is a great author, she can write anything! Sustained is very different from Emma’s other books. It has the funny parts, the awesome internal dialogue, the steamy sex, the best male POV and I can’t forget about to mention the development of the secondary characters. But this book is so different, so emotional, so heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time, so… PERFECT! That’s the word for this book. Jake, Chelsea and 6 beautiful kids stole my heart.

This is the story of Jake Becker, a successful lawyer and best friend of Stanton Shaw (Read my Overruled book review and audiobook review). He’s a man of habits, he had a time to wake up, to drink coffee, his schedule was immovable, he was stern, strict and he didn’t smile very often. And he didn’t date. He had several hook ups, but nothing serious, never serious. Until he received some not great news and he’s forced to start dating. On the other side, Chelsea had to leave her life behind in California and face the responsibility to raise her 6 nieces and nephews who lost their parents. How did their paths cross? You’ll have to read this amazing book to find out.

I love everything about this book. The kids for starters, they all were amazing, all of them, the fangirl Riley, the trouble maker Rory, the smart skater boy Raymond, the rainbow little girl Rosaleen, the pretty “hi” baby girl Regan and the most adorable baby boy Ronan. They made this book beautiful to read. Of course I love Chelsea, she’s sweet, funny, caring, smart and sexy. She is the cool aunt and she is also the best guardian for the kids. I also love Stanton *sigh*, Sophia, Brent *sigh again* and the beautiful sunshine from Sunshine, Presley. And of course, I love madly, like I’ve always loved all Emma’s men, like a book boyfriend who has gained a spot in my top 10, I love Jake. He’s has a tough exterior but he has the most wonderful heart.

More than 100% recommended! In fact, if you see Emma Chase in the cover, just read it, you won’t be disappointed.

Vivian’s Review

Where to even begin with describing Sustained other than it is plain and simple PERFECTION! I would highly recommend this book to anyone with a pulse…and I have *wink*. I even read several of the funny scenes to my hubby (and I NEVER read out loud to him) and he busted a gut…and he didn’t even know anything about the book…that’s how believable and hilarious it is. Jake’s mental dialogue is downright comical and had me chuckling throughout the entire book!

I went into Sustained completely blind…I didn’t read the synopsis, like I typically do. I knew that I wanted to read this book though bc I read the first book in the series Overruled (Legal Briefs #1) and that is where Jake Becker is introduced and of course my intrigue was peaked…so I HAD to read his story. Right?

So I am going to cheat a little on this review and use some of Emma’s wording. In the beginning of the book, there is an “acknowledgments” section where, well, that is where acknowledgments from Emma to her publicists, editor, assistant, other authors, readers, etc. go and in there she states it perfectly:

“There’s a depth and poignancy to Jake and Chelsea that pulls so hard on the heartstrings and yet is also so fun. Their passion, their hopes and fears, sadness and joy was an extraordinary thing to experience—I couldn’t remember being more excited to share a story with my readers.” –Emma Chase.

(And excited you should be! Because idk how readers can’t love Sustained!)

THAT right there is how I would describe this book in a nutshell. The reader could literally feel all those aspects in the book: passion, hopes, fears, sadness, and joy. Here are some examples:

The passion between Jake and Chelsea. And oh boy was it hawt! They had to get creative, what with 6 kids running around 😛

The hope that Chelsea is putting on herself that she would make her brother and sister in law proud of the children she is now raising for them in their absence. Like anyone with children (I have children of my own), raising kids is NOT easy…let alone raising 6 kids, that aren’t yours! THAT is a challenge, but Chelsea does the best she can! I loved that she wasn’t this “perfect stand in mom” for the kids and that she had hurtles along the way that we, as readers, got to read and feel.

The fears of the unknown and change.  Jake feared the unknown of being a “family man”…that isn’t something he signed up for, it just kinda happened.

The sadness of loss.

And the joy of finding something you didn’t know you wanted. Chelsea and Jake <3

Well like I stated above…it is perfection, so clearly I wasn’t disappointed. I had this silly happy smirk on my face for a majority of the book (except the sadder parts of course). I would catch myself laughing out loud at times and I’d look around to make sure no one was watching me. LOL! Every character from the dog named Cousin It to the 6 children: Riley, Rory, Raymond, Rosaleen, Regan, and Ronan…I fell in love with! Don’t even get me started on the kids…loved them all! Emma Chase is a new author that I’ve personally found in 2015 and she is definitely on my top favorite authors just from this book alone!
