He’s thirty-eight. I’m twenty-three.
He speaks Spanish. I speak English.
He lives in Spain. I live in Canada.
He dresses in thousand-dollar suits. I’m covered in tattoos.
He’s married and has a five-year old daughter.
I’m single and can’t commit to anyone or anything.
Until now.Because when they say you can’t choose who you fall in love with, boy ain’t that the damn truth.

To a restless dreamer like Vera Miles, it sounded like the experience of a lifetime. Instead of spending her summer interning for her astronomy major, she would fly to Spain where she’d spend a few weeks teaching conversational English to businessmen and women, all while enjoying free room and board at an isolated resort. But while Vera expected to get a tan, meet new people and stuff herself with wine and paella, she never expected to fall in love.
Mateo Casalles is unlike anyone Vera has ever known, let alone anyone she’s usually attracted to. While Vera is a pierced and tatted free spirit with a love for music and freedom, Mateo is a successful businessman from Madrid, all sharp suits and cocky Spanish charm. Yet, as the weeks go on, the two grow increasingly close and their relationship changes from purely platonic to something…more.
Something that makes Vera feel alive for the first time.
Something that can never, ever be.
Or so she thinks.
“You can fall in love in a second, the heart has no regard for time.”
10. stars!
ABSOLUTELY STUNNING!
This book is emotionally gorgeous. I needed a box of tissues through almost the entire book, not only because of the sadness and emotion it held but because this right here could happen to any of us. I know that adultery is a sensitive subject, but what Karina Halle did with it was turn it a way that we could understand that sometimes is just love that happens not adultery.
I believe that Vera and Mateo found each other in the perfect time. They needed each other despite of all the barriers between them. We see the struggles of this characters, trying hard to do the right thing, never thinking about what was actually best for them. I felt extremely inside this story, it was so heartbreaking reading about this two people falling in love the way Vera and Mateo did and it felt like their soul was breaking apart. And i was breaking apart too but at the end seeing that Vera and Mateo were always meant to be together in between all that heartache made me cry just happy tears. This two found themselves with one another, it was beautiful.
…“you’re full of life and you make me want to be a better man, to live louder, to bend and break all the damn rules.”
Karina Halle is such an excellent author, i mean i love it when an author breaks my heart but then brings my shattered pieces back together but then my heart is so happy it just feels happier than before it broke. Yeah Halle does that to my heart and i love her for it. Karina Halle books are not just books they are an experience.
