My story isn’t a love story … not the typical kind anyway.
As a lawyer, I’m used to discovery, but I never saw this one coming.

Every day, River gives me ten reasons to stay away, and then eleven reasons why I can't. Our relationship was to remain strictly business, or at least I tried.

Four years of marriage, and everything with Cole has changed. I never knew two people who lived together could be so distant. But I’m not ready to give up on him.

One man wants to break me.
The other is just trying to get even.

Both are lying to me.

— 5 stars —

“Break even” is the story of Marley and River. Well, and her husband Cole… Their marriage is far from happy, but Marley doesn’t know what she’s missing, until she meets River. Soon, she finds herself in a toxic mixture of adultery and secrets. Will she find her own happiness in the end?

When I read the plot and knew this book is from one of the best angst-writers out there, I had to read it! And boy, did Lisa DeJong deliver… “Break even” is such an amazing book. Granted, it broke my heart – but it was worth it in the end.

Though I’ve enjoyed Marley’s story immensely, I wouldn’t say it’s for everyone. Like my short description already said – it contains adultery, and a hell of a lot of that to be honest. But it’s not like in other books, where you hate the female MC for cheating on her sweet husband. No, in my eyes her husband Cole was as much of a cheater as she was. And I loved ‘the other guy’, River, too. The book was complicated, multi-layered and it contained twists and turns that surprised me.

Best is though, if you start reading without too much information beforehand. I didn’t know much and that was for the best.

The writing was amazing, I laughed, cried, almost drowned my kindle in the bathtub and swooned. So, it had everything an emotional gripping book should have.

All in all, I rate “Break even” with 5 stars and can recommend it to everyone. But please keep in mind, that it contains adultery, so proceed with caution if you have a problem with that.
