One story. Two couples.

I proposed on our first date.
She laughed and told me I was insane. Less than a day later, she said yes.
It was a whirlwind, but we were happy…
Until we got greedy and wanted a family.

It was a life I couldn’t give her, not for lack of trying. Fertility just wasn’t on our side. We sought out doctors and treatments. Spent money we didn’t have. Lied to our families. Smiled for our friends. Put on a brave face for a world that didn’t understand.
Finally, we were successful…
Until we were forced to bury our son.

We were left broken, battered, and destroyed.
They say love is in the details, but it was the details that ruined us.

This is the story of how I took back what had always been mine.
The retrieval of my wife and our family.

Book Review: 4 stars

“Retrieval” is the first installment in a new duet by Aly Martinez. Her “On the Ropes”-Series was amazing, so I was giddy to learn she had something new coming. And the blurb drew me in immediately.

What I thought I was getting was a second-chance-romance. But this book was so much more. The romance was only one part of this story – there was a great chunk of suspense and a story surrounding a second couple also. Normally, romance-novels that are filled to the brim with suspense and mysterious plot twists are a no-go for me. Mostly, I’m so sidetracked from solving all the mysteries, that the romance loses it’s focus for me. And it was a little bit like this in “Retrieval”, too. Don’t get me wrong, the romance was beautiful, but I wished for the focus on being on this, not so much on everything else. What the everything else is, I won’t tell here. Also, this would be too complex, Aly Martinez created a web of events, twists and turns. I’d even say it’s best to go in blind.

There is a huge cliffhanger at the end of this book, but that’s not an issue IMO, seen as the sequel will be out on the 27th of September anyway.

All in all, I rate “Retrieval” with 4 stars and can’t wait for the sequel to find out how everything works out for everyone involved. I can definitely recommend it to all fans of suspense filled romance.
