This book can be read as a standalone.

A knight in tarnished armor is still a knight.

When you’re a defense attorney in Washington, DC, you see firsthand how hard life can be, and that sometimes the only way to survive is to be harder. I, Jake Becker, have a reputation for being cold, callous, and intimidating—and that suits me just fine. In fact, it’s necessary when I’m breaking down a witness on the stand.

Complications don’t work for me—I’m a “need-to-know” type of man. If you’re my client, tell me the basic facts. If you’re my date, stick to what will turn you on. I’m not a therapist or Prince Charming—and I don’t pretend to be.

Then Chelsea McQuaid and her six orphaned nieces and nephews came along and complicated the ever-loving hell out of my life. Now I'm going to Mommy & Me classes, One Direction concerts, the emergency room, and arguing cases in the principal's office.

Chelsea’s too sweet, too innocent, and too gorgeous for her own good. She tries to be tough, but she’s not. She needs someone to help her, defend her…and the kids.

And that — that, I know how to do.

Maybe I’m biased when it comes to Sebastian York’s voice but damn, his voice… that voice was perfect for Mr. Jake Becker in Sustained. Jake is the kind of bad boy I want in my life. He’s witty, clever and oh so smart. There’s an undercurrent to him that reminds me of Will Sumner. 😍 If you’ve read Christina Lauren’s Beautiful Player then you know exactly what I mean.  He’s a lustful guy. A guy who thinks with his dick. A guy I hate to love and love to hate, lol! Despite him being a douche at times, it was nice to see him evolve into someone he’d never imagine himself to be.  Parenting is no joke but he stepped into the role flawlessly.

The gorgeous Ms. Chelsea is a character you can’t help but love. She’s strong and so selfless and at times I wanted to say, “Hey, let me babysit for you so you can take a day off to pamper yourself or take a day to relax and read a good book.” She lost her brother and her sister in law ina blink of an eye and to step into a parenting role overnight to 6 kids is such a huge responsibility. She somehow made it work and did the best she could with them.  Not sure if I can ever do that!

When it comes to Chelsea and Jake’s relationship, I very much love watching it blossom. Despite them becoming an instant family overnight and Jake’s hesitation about caring for Chelsea’s nieces and nephew I thought they made a great team at parenting. Although while, I knew Jake was going to freak out over parental responsibilities.  I’m glad Chelsea didn’t stick around for him to come to his senses. I’m glad she was strong enough to move on even when her heart was still very much attached to Jake.  I’m also glad he came to his senses and realize he’s the male figure the kids need in their lives and if he wanted to be with Chelsea then he’s gonna have to make piece that she comes with a package.

Also, it was nice to see the other characters and see what they’ve been up to.  Sustained was a good story. A feel good story. The kids had me at “Hi!”  I’m looking forward to meeting Brent and getting to know him on a more personal level.
