accepted.â
Despite what she said, it certainly didnât sound as if she meant it. âThank you.â
âWhy did you lie?â she demanded.
âOkay, good question. I was afraidââ
âOf what?â
âAfraid you wouldnât agree to the lower rent payment if you knew I owned the duplex.â
She threw him an angry look. âYouâre right, I wouldnât have. What I want to know is why you felt it was so important for me to move next door to you.â
âBecause.â He didnât have an answer that would satisfy her. He couldnât very well say heâd fallen completely and totally in love with her and that he couldnât stand the thought of losing Noelle. Not that she was really his to loseâ¦
ââBecauseâ? Oh, that explains everything.â
âI wanted to be nearby in order to protect both of you,â he returned, losing his own patience. âWhatâs so under-handed about that? If David showed up, I wanted him to deal with me, and leave you and Noelle alone.â
âI can take care of my own problems,â she snapped. âI donât need a knight in shining armor riding to my rescue.â
More like tarnished armor, he reflected, but didnât say anything.
âBesides, David did show up,â she added.
âAnd you panicked,â he reminded her.
âYes, I did panic, and then you jumped into hero mode again, asking me to marry you.â
That hadnât been one of his finer moments.
âOf all the ridiculous solutions to come up with,â Mary Jo muttered. âAnd I was frightened enough and foolish enough to say yes.â
âWe came to our senses,â he said.
âYes, thankfully.â
He sighed. âIâm sorry, Mary Jo. I was wrong to mislead you.â
âYou did more than mislead me. You lied.â
âOkay, I lied.â
âI donât appreciate it.â
âThat I get,â he said drily. âI just want you to know I regret the lieâand the, uh, misguided proposal.â
No response.
They arrived at the duplex, but neither seemed ready to get out of the car.
âWhere do we go from here?â Mack finally asked.
Mary Jo didnât answer for the longest time. When she did, she turned sideways and looked at him, her eyes wide and imploring. âCan I trust you, Mack?â
âYes.â He said it without hesitation. âIâd do anything for you and Noelle.â
âWhy?â
His shoulders rose as he took a deep breath. He was afraid of Mary Joâs reaction if he confessed his feelings. Sheâd probably leave, go back to Seattle, uproot the life sheâd created here.
âYou donât know?â he asked instead.
âNo,â she said. âI donât.â
âYou need someone. You donât want to admit it but you do, and I want to be that someone.â Heâd toned downhis feelings and hoped sheâd understandâand not take offense.
âOf all the people Iâve met since Noelle was born, you were the one I felt I could trust the most. Iâm devastated to learn otherwise.â
âWill you give me another chance?â he asked. He wouldnât plead with her, wouldnât state his case. The decision was hers; this was make-it-or-break-it time. Heâd faltered badly but, God willing, Mary Jo would look past his error in judgment and agree to move forward.
âIâm not making any promises,â she said.
âIâm not asking for any.â
She nodded. âJust donât ever lie to me again.â
âYou have my word.â The second he spoke, he realized that expression was a poor choice.
âYour word,â she repeated. âFor what thatâs worth.â
Mack would need to show her that his word was good and his lie of omission was the wrong thing done for the right reasons.
âFrom this point forward Iâll pay fair
