    The problem was that although he had pulled himself out of poverty he always had a funny feeling that something was missing from his life.     Better the devil you know: this means that it is better to stick with someone/thing that you know (even if it/they are not perfect), rather than trying someone/thing completely new (and unknown).
    Example: I could move to a new country but I always think that it’s better the devil you know, so I’ll probably just stay here.

    Business acumen: this is not really a phrase (it’s more of a collocation), but it is very useful. It means that someone has a real talent for business.
    Example: When he started his business he didn’t have much money but he did have very good business acumen and a few good connections. This meant that he was destined to be successful.

    To go from strength to strength: to get better and better.
    Example: The Batman films just go from strength to strength.

    All the hours that god sends: to do something every available hour.
    Example: When I was younger I worked every hour god sent to get my business started, but now I’m able to take it a little bit easy.

    Enough is enough: this is used when one is no longer willing to accept something which is undesirable.
    Example: I put up with my brother’s bad moods when we were kids but when we became adults I just thought ‘enough is enough’ and now I just try to avoid seeing him if possible.

Part Three

    One day a few months after he had sold his company he suddenly had a burning desire to return to the area that he had grown up in. He was walking along when he noticed that there were lots of buildings which used to be shops but were now just lying empty. He knew that this was a very poor area and that there was a huge problem with unemployment, so he decided then and there to do something about it. He gathered local community groups together and started a business advice service. There he would give advice and help with funding for young people who wanted to start their own businesses. Now that area is completely thriving and people from far and wide come there to go shopping. He has completely improved both the area and the lives of people who live there. Also at the end of the article he said that even though he liked making money and working in finance he always felt that he was just going through the motions . Now that he is working for the community and changing people’s lives he’s found the one thing that was missing all those years; passion for what he was doing.

    (To have a) burning desire: this is a desire that you cannot stop. It usually pushes you into taking action.
    Example: I always had a burning desire to go to India, so when I was 30 I spent 6 months working there.

    Far and wide: a large area. This is used when speaking about a product/service or fame.
    Example 1: People came from far and wide to see the concert.
    Example 2: He is known far and wide as a great motivational speaker.
