that
she did not want to be with him anymore. She was very upset as she
walked away from him. The last time she talked to him was a month
later. He had quit calling her because he thought she was not
interested in him anymore. Luke felt bad knowing that she had been
afraid that she might be pregnant. He should have fought for her. Why
didn't he fight for her? Why didn't he know she was pregnant? He was
so happy that he had a son. Luke knew he was going to make sure they
were a family. He had to put aside how angry he was that she had not
told him. Jessica didn't want to disrupt his life and she was only
eighteen at the time. He couldn't believe that her parents were so
upset with her and had stopped talking to her over the baby. Why
didn't they realize how important their grandchild was? How did she
do it all by herself? He knew he needed to talk to Renee and thank
her for everything she had done for his child. She was an amazing
person. He hoped she realized just how wonderful she was. She was two
years younger than her sister, and she had given up her own childhood
to be there for her.
    Luke
thought about his own mother. She had a six year old grandson and
didn't even know it. How was he going to tell her? How would she
react? He knew his mother would open her arms and life to the little
boy. She would love him so much. Would she hate Jessica? He had no
idea how he was going to tell his mother. Crap, he thought, as he
looked down at Jessica.
    He
snuggled into her and drifted off to sleep. Luke jumped when he heard
an unfamiliar noise.
    “ Jessica,
wake up,” he said, as he nudged her. “Is that your
phone?”
    It
was a strange voice saying something he could not understand. Jessica
jumped and ran to the living room.
    “ It's
my ringtone for Renee. She plays with my phone and changes the
ringtone for her calls. She likes to see how I react,” she
yelled out, as she grabbed her phone.
    She
came back through the bedroom door and sat on the bed as she answered
the phone.
    “ Hey
Renee,” Jessica said into the phone.
    Luke
saw fear in her eyes as they widened. He could not hear the other
line. Something was wrong. He moved next to Jessica.
    “ What?”
Jessica asked. “Slow down, Renee. What's wrong?”
    “ What
happened?”
    “ An
accident where?”
    “ Is
he okay?”
    “ Are
you okay?”
    “ Renee,
calm down so I can hear you.”
    Luke
saw the tears as they ran down Jessica's face. He rubbed her back and
tried to hear the other side of the conversation. He could hear
noises, but could not understand what Renee was saying.
    “ Its
okay, Renee. Ride with him. Go with them. What hospital are they
going to?”
    Luke
jumped off the bed, grabbed his clothes, and started putting them on.
    “ Okay,
we are on our way. Is he okay? Is he going to be okay?”
    “ Shit,
we'll be right there. It's going to be okay Renee. Nobody is going to
blame you. It's not your fault. Stay with him. You have to calm down
for him. Tell him I love him.”
    Jessica
hung up the phone and started to cry. Luke had just tied his shoes.
He grabbed her into his arms and held her. She tried to talk, but
nothing was making sense.
    “ Is
everything okay?” he asked.
    “ I
don't know,” she blurted out. “There was an accident.
They are taking Lucas to the hospital. I couldn't hear what she was
saying. We have to go. Is he going to be okay? He has to be okay.”
    Luke
held her tight. He was so scared, but he wanted to be strong for her.
She had her face buried in his chest. He took her chin in his hand
and looked into her eyes.
    “ Everything
is going to be okay,” he said. “We are going to go
together. I am going to be with you. We will all get through this
together. I love you. He is going to be okay.”
    Jessica
pulled away from him, started pulling clothes out of drawers, and ran
into the bathroom. Luke fell onto her bed with his face in his hands.
He could feel the tears streaming down his face. Stay strong, he told
himself. Be strong
