âHeâs a good guy, too. But I never said he was Romeo Montague.â
âI donât get why heâs so desperate to have Alissa at this dinner tomorrow,â Rita said.
âNerves,â Wes answered. âEveryoneâs alert for reasons to back out at a signing. Rodâs the kind of guy who could get jittery and blurt out the wrong thing. It sounds like Alissa keeps him on an even keel.â
âItâs also for his peace of mind,â I said. âHeâll be upset if he finds out she stabbed him in the back. Itâll be worse if he finds out sheâs hurt or dead. If I can at least tell him sheâs okay, heâll feel a lot better.â
âWho are these people Rodâs signing the deal with?â Wes asked.
âPlush Biologics has a genetic skin treatment called Eternaderm,â I said. âIt rejuvenates your elastin fibers by regulating the enzymes that break them down and promoting the synthesis of new fibers. Your skin gets looser and more brittle as you age. Healthier elastin proteins restore suppleness and resilience.â
Wesâs eyes widened. âThatâs going to
score
. If it works.â
âItâs being tested. Theyâre still âironing out the wrinklesâ before it goes commercial,â Rita said, repeating Rodâs favorite phrase to describe Eternadermâs progress. Wes rolled his eyes.
âRod did some work for them that fast-forwarded Eternaderm,â I said. âThat led to the strategic alliance. Plush is working on genes to regulate melanin, too. Youâll be able to change your skin color at will.â
Wes peered at his reflection in a blank video screen. âI think Iâm going to need Eternaderm. Iâve been out in the sun too much lately.â
Rita peered with him. âYeah, youâre losing that pale engineer tone. But keep the wrinkles, Wes. They give you character.â She liked to give him a hard time. Wes got nervous around her because she was so forthright in her opinions. âAnyway,â Rita went on, âyou canât afford Eternaderm until your companyâs IPO. This is a high-end market. Silicon Valley has lots of wealthy people who are terrified of getting old.â
âRod needs to retool and extend his technology,â I said. âThat takes money, which Algoplex doesnât have. So the third leg of the triangle is new capital coming from Plushâs big backer. Sylvain Partners will fund Algoplexâs next stage.â
Wes ceased his self-inspection. âI hope Rod isnât giving away too much equity.â
âYou know how it works. Bargain your soul to the VCâs. But Rod seems satisfied with the deal.â
âWhat is Alissa going to do, hold the pen for him?â Rita said.
âYou donât understand business, Rita.â Wes had found a way to get a little revenge. âYouâve got to make all the right moves at an event like this or youâll spook your partners. Especially if Alissaâs been spying.â
âWouldnât Alissa being there make him even more shaky?â
âNot if heâs sure sheâs on his side,â I said. âAnd if sheâs still missing, heâs got Silicon Glamour to worry about. I need to throw Rupert off the trail for a few days. String him along with progressreports. Tell him Alissa is on her way back. As a matter of factâ can I check my email down here, Rita?â
âSure,â she said, swiveling to bring up a browser on her G4.
âI got an email back from foxylady77 late yesterday,â I said. âThey forwarded my message to Alissaâs mother, Wendy. Iâm waiting to hear from her.â
âRodâs such a nervous nelly,â Rita said as the throat-clearing sounds of connection came over the wire. âHeâs got to take charge. He owns the company, for heavenâs sake.â
