feelings. The subject of Sam had upset her. Trying to understand without being able to connect fully was a challenge. One he had never had to deal with before. In the past he followed commands. He took the position he was told to. He killed when he was ordered to. He obeyed. He never contemplated strategy. It was automatic; part of his training. He had relied on his commander to decipher their enemies’ motives and emotions. “I do not want to distress you with my questions.” Niail stood behind Kimi as she washed her hands in the sink. “I am trying to understand why you deny what you feel.” Kimi shook the water from her hands and reached for a towel. When she had finished she turned to face Niail. She was within a few inches of him and his stomach tightened. The scent of her filled his nostrils and it took all his strength not to pull her into his arms. “This attraction between us is crazy.” Kimi’s gaze seemed to penetrate to his soul. “You’re not right for me. I need a man who understands my goals and people.” “My bond grows stronger each minute I spend with you.” Niail’s fingers caressed her face. “My injury is preventing you from understanding the depth of our connection.” Kimi shook her head. “It has no future.” “I will honor whatever you decide.” Niail’s kept his voice steady, even though it felt as if he were breaking in two. Kimi’s eyes widened and he was lost. Surely she would not deny him one kiss. He leaned close and waited. She didn’t disappoint. Her hands clasped around his neck and she pulled him in close. Niail wrapped his arms around her waist. He brushed his lips across hers and felt his heart thundering in his chest. The world spun as his tongue slid across the crease of her mouth. She sighed and opened for him. All thought vanished as he was swept into a maelstrom of sensations and feelings. His body hardened. He pulled her closer, feeling the frantic beat of her heart against his own. Reality disappeared and in its place was paradise. How could he ever let her go? He was bonded to her. His very existence depended on keeping her near. Kimi twisted her head away and ended the kiss. Her eyes were glazed with passion as she struggled for breath. “That can never happen again.”

Kimi bit her lip and turned back to the stove. Niail was helping Wil with his coloring and Peta was supervising. Peta was sitting on her knees and leaning against Niail. She was trying to teach him the finer points of using crayons. “You have to stay in the lines.” Peta pointed at Niail’s picture. “Didn’t you ever color before?” “No.” Niail leaned closer to the book. “Our training was the only thing we had time for.” “You must have taken a break?” “We changed from one educator to another. There was too much to learn. We couldn’t waste the precious time we had. Knowledge could mean the difference between living and dying.” “It’s not easy being a superhero.” Peta’s voice was low. “You don’t have to worry. I can teach you coloring.” “All kids learn to color.” Wil’s voice was encouraging. “You will learn fast.” Niail grunted. “I do not seem to be coordinated.” “It’s okay to be messy at the start.” Peta picked up a yellow crayon. “Try this color on the moon.” Kimi closed her eyes for a brief second. How could her children be so accepting of Niail? They had only known him since yesterday, yet they believed in him totally. They wanted to be near him. She wanted the same thing, but she couldn’t risk getting hurt. There was a strong attraction between them. That didn’t mean it was meant to be. She had learned her lesson with Sam, and she wasn’t going to mistake sexual attraction for love everlasting. That kiss they had shared had been amazing. Never had she experienced anything like it; certainly not with Sam. There had been a total connection between her and Niail. They had become one
