heâll get to join the club.â
Millie looked at him. âWhat club?â
âEveryone who crashes at that corner joins the Shuttlecock Club,â the man said impatiently, craning his neck to see if he could spot the human missile.
All of a sudden the whooshing of the sled stopped.
âLook! There he is!â Lucas pointed at the figure in the air.
The crowd gasped.
Shilly covered her eyes. âI canât watch.â
âStupid man,â Dolly muttered, wringing her hands.
Time seemed to expand in the seconds that followed as the spectators watched the events unfold in slow motion. Cyril hurtled through the air and disappeared into a cloud of snow.
âIs he all right?â Shilly asked, still hiding behind her hands.
The group looked towards the commentatorâs box above them.
âMedics,â the loudspeaker blared. âCould we get the medics to Shuttlecock immediately?â
Shilly placed her hands across her chest. âGood heavens.â
âHeâs going to be fine,â Cecelia told the group, hoping it were true.
âCan we get to him?â Mrs Oliver asked the man who had foretold Cyrilâs fate.
âLeave it to the professionals,â the fellow replied calmly. âTheyâve got all the equipment down there, and if he has to be taken to hospital theyâll have a snowmobile ready. Believe me, heâs not the first to come off there and he wonât be the last.â
âHospital!â Shilly gasped. âHe shouldnât have been on that course in the first place. Why are men so ⦠so ⦠stubborn?â
No one spoke a word as all eyes were focused on the middle section of the track.
âHeâs moving,â the announcer said, looking through his binoculars. âAlthough, that shoulder seems to be at a very strange angle. Theyâre loading him onto the snowmobile and â¦â
âCome on!â Shilly shouted up at the commentator. âDonât give us half the story, man!â
âHeâs raised his good arm and heâs giving the thumbs up,â the man blurted.
There was a huge cheer from the small crowd.
Dolly and Shilly hugged one another, and Cecelia allowed herself to breathe again. âThank heavens for that,â she said to her husband. âSo are you still keen to have a go?â
Hugh looked at her sheepishly. âMaybe not today.â
âHe was never going to do it, Mummy,â Alice-Miranda said. âHe was only teasing.â
Cecelia smiled and squeezed her daughterâs shoulder. âWhen it comes to your father, IÂ can never be too sure.â
The mosquito motor of the snowmobile buzzed as the vehicle carried Cyril to the top of the track. The family rushed down from the balcony and up the course to meet them. The wailing of an ambulance siren sounded in the distance.
âGood Lord, Cyril, you were flying,â Hugh said with a grin. âPity you stacked it.â
âLooks like thatâs the end of my Cresta ambitions,â the man said wryly.
âYou were awesome,â Lucas said. âDid you know you were on track to beat the record?â
âSeriously?â Cyril looked at the lad.
Sep nodded. âWe couldnât believe how fast you were going.â
âNeither could I. IÂ lost my footing not long after the start and then IÂ just couldnât get it again. Thank heavens for that corner or IÂ think you might have been scraping me off the barrier at the end,â Cyril joked, then winced as two medics began to examine his injuries.
âWeâre going to have to pop that shoulder back in,â one of them said.
âAnd youâll need to go to hospital so they can check if you have a concussion,â the other added. She directed Cyril to watch her pointer finger as she moved it from side to side.
âIâll go with him,â Hugh said, watching the medics ready the
