then… you and I…?”
“Are married and bonded,” he assured her.  “And all in the human manner, or at least as near as I can come to it without violating the laws of my own world.  And soon enough,” he said, leaning in and kissing her belly, “we shall be parents to a new species.  And we have the resources of twenty-thousand trees to see to it that we live safe… happy… and healthy with one another.”
She smiled at him, savoring the feeling of it all.  So much of what had brought her out here had been the unknown.  The excitement… the anticipation… all of it had worked wonders on her mind and her heart.  There had been something in there that begged the indulgence of her scientific curiosity, yes, but somewhere along the way she had chosen to discard that.  Ultimately she knew what she was getting by coming out here: a husband – in a manner of speaking – and a chance to literally play mother to a whole new kind of life.
She didn’t know what that life was growing in her belly, but there was the feeling of that same excitement of facing the unknown ahead.  Somehow, that was enough for her.
“I also feel I must apologize.”
She returned her thoughts back to her new husband.  “Apologize?  For what?”
“For my lack of performance,” he said rather bashfully.  “We were able to only copulate for nearly thirty or forty minutes before I… peaked.”  His new human flesh turned red, but he pressed on.  “All of my studies suggest that the best of males on your world can perform for at least several hours before climaxing.  I fear that I have failed in this regard.”
She thought about correcting him, but saw a better advantage in the cold and scientifically broken down assessment that he had given.  A sinister smile touched her mouth.  “Well… we’ll just have to try and do better next time, won’t we?”
His smile was genuine.  “I’m willing, whenever you are.”
    “Good to know.”
They reached for each other again.  And as their bodies joined she felt a sense of dignity and pride within her.  She had a new life… a new purpose… and even though it had been less than a day she felt certain that she could build a new life here and be happy.
It was a big galaxy after all.  There were worse places she could end up spending the rest of her life.
    THE END

Chosen By The Russian Mafia

    Chapter 1
“Come on, Alexei, one more job, and then you can leave clean.” The man on the other end of the line said in a heavy Russian accent, making Alexei shake his head in consternation.
“That’s what you said last time, Sergio. And the time before that. I told you, I’m out.” His own deep voice carried an equally thick accent, although his was slightly more rural. He preferred not to think of his lowly past. Nothing more than another mouth to feed in a family of thirteen, left to fend for himself as his drunk of a father spent most of his time buried in a bottle, and his mother had to turn to less than savory means to support them all.
The first time he had heard the word Bratva, or the brotherhood as the Russian mafia like to call themselves, Alexei was only seven years old. His mother had gotten in deep, too deep, taking clients in an area controlled by the Bratva, and they weren’t about to let some country prostitute eat into their business.
They had stormed into their house, killing his father and two of his brothers before his mother could make the deal. Alexei for her life. As the youngest, he would be the easiest to train, to turn into whatever they wanted. They had taken the deal, and Alexei had never seen his family again.
He pushed the memories away, shoving them deep into the black corners of his mind that he refused to look at. Despite his rough childhood, it had made him the man he was today, and had also given him the means to amass a vast fortune. He had climbed quickly up the ladder in the mafia, mostly due to to his extreme cleverness, innate
