earlier?
A baseball cap.
Gripped in Cindyâs hand.
Cindy hadnât worn a baseball cap to the cabin.
If the cap wasnât hers, where did it come from?
Had someone else been wearing it?
The killer?
Did she grab it off her murderer?
Gretchen raised her eyes to the others. Jackson was watching her. She returned his stare.
âWhat is it?â Jackson demanded.
Gretchen swallowed hard to clear her throat. âCindy is holding a baseball cap,â she replied.
Hannahâs eyes popped open. âWhat did you say?â
âCindy is holding a baseball cap,â Gretchen repeated. âShe didnât wear one to the cabin.â
Her hand trembled as she pointed to the cap.
âWho does it belong to? Whose cap is it?â

P atrickâs mouth gaped open in shock. âItâitâs mine,â he sputtered.
âYours?â Gretchen gasped.
Marco jumped off the kitchen counter. His eyes narrowed as he studied Patrick.
âHow did your baseball cap get in Cindyâs hand?â he demanded, narrowing his eyes at Patrick.
Patrick shrugged. âHey, come on. Give me a break. I donât know. Why are you asking me?â
âBecause it belongs to you,â Gretchen said sharply. âYou admitted it.â
âJust because my cap is in Cindyâs hand, you think I killed her?â Patrick exclaimed. âThatâs the stupidest thing I ever heard!â
Hannahâs eyes shot to Patrick. She backed away from him. âYou killed her?â
âOf course I didnât kill Cindy,â Patrick insisted. He took a step toward Hannah.
âStay away from me!â Hannah screamed. She darted to Gilâs side. âDonât come any closer!â
âHeyâcome on, guys!â Patrick pleaded. âYou know me. Weâve been friends forever. Why would I kill Cindy? Itâs totally dumb.â
âThen why is your cap in her hand?â Marco demanded again. âHow did it get there?â
Patrick threw his hands up in the air. âI donât know!â
âIs that all you can say?â Gil cried. He had his arms around Hannah, who was shaking. âThat cap is real evidence, Patrick. It points right to you.â
âI want to go home,â Hannah sobbed. âI wish weâd never come to this horrible cabin.â
âIt doesnât prove anything,â Patrick insisted. âI donât know how my cap got in Cindyâs hand. I hung it on the coatrack by the front door when we came in.â
âNobody saw you do it,â Jackson told him.
âI am not lying! You have to believe me!â Patrick pleaded. âI hung my cap by the front door. Maybe Cindy decided to wear it.â
Hannah uttered a bitter cry. âYouâre pathetic! Do you really expect us to believe that?â
âCindy is wearing a jacket,â Gretchen pointed out.
âYouâre right,â Gil said. âItâs my grandfatherâs lumber jacket. From the hall closet.â
âSo maybe Cindy was going outside for some air,â Gretchen continued. âMaybe it was raining, and she didnât want to get her hair wet. So she grabbed Patrickâs cap off the rack. Cindy freaked out if her hair got the least bit frizzy. Everyone knows that.â
Patrick nodded. âThat makes sense to me,â he said.
âBut if she was worried about her hair in the rain, why was she clutching your cap so tightly after she was stabbed?â Gretchen asked.
âI think she was trying to leave a clue to the identity of her killer,â Marco said. âMaybe the killer was wearing the capâand she pulled it off his head while he was stabbing her.â
âNo!â Patrick gasped, shaking his head. âNo.â
âYou have blood on your shirt,â Jackson pointed out.
âAnd Cindy is grasping your cap,â Gil added.
âSo what?â Patrick cried. âThat
