typically left flowing down her back and around her shoulders. She always looked well put together, with her make-up perfectly done and her sharp outfits. Fi had gorgeous green eyes and a killer body and seemed like she’d be a blast to party with.
But as hot as Fi was, Danny had never once considering going there.
For a bunch of reasons.
Namely that, inexplicably, he wasn’t even the slightest bit attracted to her.
Unlike a different Ciaramitaro sister Danny was currently trying very hard to ignore.
She should have been the easiest one to overlook, now standing quietly next to Stella wearing black leggings, white Converse sneakers, and an oversized gray tee shirt that had a picture of a cartoon girl with glasses and a caption that read, ‘I’m Adorkable.’
Her wavy, shoulder-length, dark-brown hair was pulled into a ponytail, she had no makeup on, and her glasses were folded up and hanging from the v-neck of her shirt.
And Danny wanted to fuck her in the worst way.
He might as well admit it to himself.
No use in fronting anymore.
Danny had told Nathan she was a “cold fish” and a “bitch” and he’d tried talking himself out of the attraction since the moment he’d met her, but that was all bullshit.
Kat didn’t want him and never would, but Danny wanted her.
Bad .
Was half-hard just looking at her now.
But Danny would never in a million years hit on Kat, for the same reason he’d never hit on girls like her his whole life: She was way too smart to buy his lines of bullshit, too self-assured to need his half-assed attention, and too well-adjusted to get involved with a fuck-up like Danny.
Not to mention Stella would probably pull Nathan’s service revolver out and bust a cap in Danny’s skull at the mere mention of it. She was fiercely protective of her sisters and anyone with half-a-brain knew Danny wasn’t even close to good enough for Kat.
Or anyone, really.
“Ready to eat?” Nathan’s voice jolted Danny out of his depressing thoughts.
Danny forced a smile and nodded. “Yep.”
Nathan paused. “You okay?” The corner of his mouth turned up. “It worries me when you get quiet.” Nathan glanced around the room. “Crazy, huh?”
“Yeah, to say the least.”
Danny managed to sneak another look at Kat. Now her arm was wound around Stella’s and she seemed to be leaning into her, like she needed support to stand up.
And thinking that might be the case had Danny’s stomach in knots.
He turned back to Nathan with a forced smile. “But it’s all good, though. They’re really great people. You’re really lucky, Nathan.”
Nathan clapped him on the shoulder as they made their way into the dining room. “Consider yourself lucky then, because – like it or not – they’re yours now, too.
Chapter Six
‡
T he Ciaramitaro clan was nothing if not warm and welcoming and it wasn’t long before Danny felt much more at ease. There were no weird silences or inside jokes and they seemed hell-bent on making sure Danny felt like a part of the family.
“Danny, we haven’t seen you in a while. What have you been up to?” Carla asked, smiling, as she passed Danny a huge platter of…
Danny studied the mound of food. They appeared to be little dough ovals covered in a red sauce. He helped himself to a spoonful and passed the platter to Nathan.
What had Danny been up to?
Well, the most accurate answer was drinking, fucking, sleeping, eating, pissing, shitting, working, and going to the gym, but somehow Danny thought they might frown upon that answer.
What with a bunch of kids at the table and all.
He cleared his throat. “Not too much. Working a lot.”
Danny knew they were probably all wondering why he was being so quiet. Hell, Nathan was probably surprised, too. But even Nathan couldn’t know the true depth of Danny’s dislike for home-and-hearth scenes because they really hadn’t shared that many of them over the years.
