know.â
âWhy are you breaking up with me?â
Keith started removing some textbooks. âItâs over. Why canât you accept it?â
âBecause I want to know why. Donât I deserve that? I have feelings for you and I thought you had feelings for me.â
âWell, I donât.â
Ouch! That stung! âDid you ever?â Eden wasnât sure if she wanted to hear his answer, but she had to know.
Keith shrugged. âWe went out on a couple of dates. We kissed a few times. Itâs not like we were a couple. Why are you making this into something bigger than it was?â
Eden shook her phone in his face. âBecause this message came out of nowhere. The last time I saw you, on Saturday night, when you kissed me good night on my front porch, I thought I still had a boyfriend. But then I figured something might be up when you werenât answering my calls and texts since Sunday. Iâm not clueless. Whatâs going on?â
Keith slammed his locker door shut. âIâm just not that into you anymore.â
âWho are you into?â Eden asked. âThat girl I saw you with in the cafeteria yesterday?â
A guilty look washed over Keithâs face.
Gotcha! Eden thought.
âYou coward!â she exclaimed. âYou didnât have the guts to tell me that you were dumping me for another girl. Itâs not that youâre not into me anymore. Itâs that youâre more into her!â
Keith didnât deny it and Eden could feel the tears building in the corners of her eyes. She shoved past Keith and hurried down the hallway. She was not going to cry in front of him! If he didnât want to be with her anymore, fine. She deserved to be with a guy who wanted to be with her.
But even though she knew all this, it still hurt that Keith had chosen to be with another girl.
âWhat am I going to wear on my date on Saturday night?â Jennifer asked Violet as they walked to school.
âDate? What date?â
âWith Will!â
âItâs not a date,â Violet sternly reminded her. âYouâre going to a party together. Besides, itâs not like heâs your real boyfriend. You donât have to impress the guy. You can wear whatever you want.â
âI have to make it look like Iâve put some effort into it.â
âWhy?â
Jennifer laughed. âWhat?â
âIt sounds like you care what Will thinks about you. And that can only mean one thing. Trouble.â Violet pulled Jennifer onto a bench in front of a coffee shop. âWe need to talk.â
âAbout what?â Jennifer asked, noticing the serious expression on Violetâs face.
âThis situation. Iâm getting worried.â
âSituation?â
âYouâve got to guard your heart,â Violet warned. âEven though this is all pretend, youâre going to be spending a lot of time with Will.â
âAnd?â
âYou need to be careful that you donât really fall for him.â
Jennifer laughed, getting off the bench and starting to walk again. âThatâll never happen!â
âWhy not?â Violet asked, hurrying after her. âWhat about all those girls heâs gone out with and never called back? It happened to them! Thereâs a reason why heâs called the Heartbreaker and I donât want you finding out!â
âIâm different from those other girls,â Jennifer said as she waited at a corner for the stoplight to change from red to green.
âHow?â Violet demanded, catching up with her.
âEasy,â Jennifer answered. âIâm not going to fall for him. And I know that after Valentineâs Day, Will and I will go our separate ways.â
âWell, Iâm still going to be keeping my eye on you,â Violet said. âJust to be on the safe side.â
âYouâre overreacting. Thereâs nothing to worry about.
