Dragon in the Garden
I awoke in the midst of the night by a deafening shriek.
The earth shook as what sounded to be thousands upon thousands of swords crashing into one another split the air, rattling my humble abode at the base of the mountain woods. Curiosity and fear moved me to my window, where I gazed into the night sky to see that two shadows were clashing for dominance in the air.
The pale moonlight provided enough light for me to catch the streaks running alongside their scales. The beating of their wings rippling the treetops below told me of how they moved through the air. The bone-rattling cries that rang out as they clashed spoke of rage and fury beyond the scope of men.
They were dragons, locked into what looked to be mortal combat.
Legends say that the original dragons were once human kings who squabbled over their treasures. Using their armies as extensions of their greed, they ransacked the lands for as much gold and riches they could obtained. The constant wars left the people of the lands desperate, so they prayed to the twelve patrons gods that the fighting would end.
Those gods answered by cursing those kings to turn into dragons that could read the hearts of men, and pass judgment on the greedy as penitence for eternity. Their only salvation would be to find mercy from someone innocent of sin, yet they continued to wage war with each other without end.
It was a fairy tale, of course. Something passed throughout the land for over a thousand years. Dragons were rare and powerful creatures, but the thought of them being kings rather than feral incarnations of nature was something most found hard to believe.
And it was hard to feel pity and kindness upon seeing claws flashing in the night as they tried to rend one another’s leathery pinions. Fangs desperately trying to tear out elongated throats, and tongues of fire flaring blindingly-bright in an effort to cook the muscle and organs within. It was all so primal and fierce, making you realize just how small and insignificant you were even at a distance.
I was as safe as I could be for the moment. They were battling one another at the edge of the mountain. But, if their clash continued to spill out, it would probably end up destroying my home in the process.
There was nothing I could do if it came to that. I was but a speck before all the knotted muscle that strained beneath the hard scales and fangs that could crush stone. Watching as the two continued their titanic clash further out, I thought back to when I was merely a child who knew nothing.
Back then, I believed they were once kings of wealth and power, and I often dreamed of a dragon coming in and sweeping away to live in a castle with gold and jewels as far as the eye could see. He would retake his human shape and then he would wed me, making me a queen in my own right. My mother would only smile at me and say that if I believed in it hard enough then it would come true.
That was over a decade ago, after my childhood came to an end. I wasn’t even ten when we were exiled from the village due to my mother being decried as a witch for her knowledge of plants and medicines. We struggled across the mountains until we stumbled upon this abandoned cabin. I had to bury my mother three years ago, after she drew her last breath, so now I lived alone.
Still, some childish part of me that hadn’t been snuffed out by the rigors of adulthood clung to the fairy tale. Even now, as I watched them go at one another, I couldn’t
