quickly.â
âIf it doesnât sell, does that mean they wonât be able to move?â Ben asked.
âThey probably canât buy a house in Vancouver until they sell this one,â she said.
âI hope it never sells.â
âIâm sure it will,â she said. âIt would be nice if they were here for the rest of the summer though. Until Jessy gets back from camp.â
His mom didnât understand. Jessy was great, but she didnât know about inventors invent inventions or any of the other secret games he and Jack played. âJessy canât take Jackâs place,â Ben said. âSheâs my school friend, and heâs my holiday friend. Two different things.â He frowned, trying to think of a way to make her understand. âLike you have Stella now, but you still want me.â
She laughed. âYou are right. Jackâs special. But Vancouver isnât that far away. We can visit. It will be okay.â
Maybe it will , Ben thought. Because his mom had given him an idea.
Ben was going to invent a Stupendous Plan.
Chapter Four
The next morning, Ben followed the speed bump to Jackâs house. He knocked on the door. Jackâs mom opened it. âHi, Ben. Looking for Jack?â
Ben didnât answer. He didnât even say hello. âWhat if no one buys your house?â he asked instead.
âSomeone had better buy it,â she said, laughing. âWe need the money to buy a new one.â
So it was just as his mom had said. That was good. âCan Jack come out and play?â he asked.
âSure.â She turned and called up the stairs. âJack! Benâs here.â
Thump , thump , thump . Jack came down two steps at a time, still in his pajamas. âHey! Letâs go.â
âClothes,â said his mom.
Jack looked down at his T. rex shirt and shorts. âDo I have to?â
âYes, hurry up.â She shooed him back upstairs. âBen, Iâll send him over as soon as heâs had breakfast, okay?â
Ben nodded. Jackâs mom sure would be surprised if she knew what he was planning.
By the time Jack arrived, Ben had already begun work.
âWhat are you building?â Jack asked.
âAnother catapult,â Ben said. âSort of.â
Jack looked worried. âDo you think thatâs a good idea?â
âItâs a great idea,â Ben said. âListen. You donât want to move, right?â
Jack sat down on the grass and crisscrossed his legs. âRight.â
âAnd if no one buys your house, you wonât have to.â
âSomeone is coming to look at it tomorrow,â Jack said. âTheyâll probably buy it.â
âNot if we do something to stop them,â Ben said.
âLike what?â Jack picked a blade of grass and chewed on it.
âInventors invent inventions,â Ben said, âand we need to make our most Stupendous Contraption ever.â
For the rest of the day, under the hot summer sun, the two inventors worked the hardest they had ever worked. They only stopped twice, once for popsicles and once for cookies. They didnât even go inside to use the washroom. They just peed right in the vegetable garden. They aimed for the Swiss chard, since neither of them liked eating it anyway.
By the time their parents called them for dinner, the contraption was almost complete.
âWell?â Ben said. âWhat do you think?â
He and Jack stared at their invention. It began with a series of pipes and ended with a catapult. A new and improved catapult. It was twice as large and three times as powerful as the one Benâs mom had taken away. This one was the Ultimate Catapult. It was made of metal pipes and wood ramps and three different kinds of balls. It had a small solar panel and a race-car launcher with double-A batteries. It even had a toilet seat and some other stuff.
The solar panel didnât actually work, but it
