work, HJ,â said EJ. âI need your help but I have to warn you, itâs a little above basic training.â
âIâm ready, Em, I mean, EJ,â said HJ.
EJ explained what had happened while HJ saddled up Lucinda. She expertly pulled the girth tight and adjusted the stirrups. EJ put on her riding helmet.
âNow weâre ready, EJ,â said HJ. âIâll hold Lucinda while you get on.â
EJ put one foot in the stirrups and swung the other leg over Lucinda. HJ passed her the reins. EJ put out her hand to HJ who pulled herself up and swung behind EJ, putting her hands around her friendâs waist and taking the reins.
âPut your hands over mine,â she said. âSee how your hands need to be soft? You hold the reins firmly but not too tight. Okay, you have a go now and give her a kick so she knows weâre ready.â
EJ felt confident with her friend behind her and they walked out of the mounting yard and onto the moonlit track leading to the drive.
Then a loud voice shattered the silence.
âEJ12!â shouted GG22. âWhat are you doing back here? Whoâs that with you? Where are you going?â
It was GG22. Had she been watching them on the spy-flies? EJ couldnât stay to find out. Instinctively, she gave Lucinda a sharp kick. HJ leant into EJ as Lucinda broke into a gallop and they raced down the drive away from the CAT. Away from GG22 and, they hoped, towards Trojan.
Â
EJ looked back but GG22 wasnât following them as they rode out of the CAT.
âLook, EJ,â said HJ, shining a torch on the ground. âHorse poo! Itâs probably Trojanâs. Letâs go in this direction.â
EJ and HJ rode on. They saw more poo and then some broken branches, as if something had pushed through roadside bushes.
âPerhaps a car frightened her off the road. And look, in there! More horse poo. Letâs turn off here,â said EJ as she pulled on the left rein to guide Lucinda off the road and into the bush.
They moved more slowly through the brackenand fallen trees in the bush but even in the dark, Lucinda was sure-footed and steady. Then, suddenly, the bay stopped. There was a noise, a squeaking noise. Lucinda shook her head and snorted. Her ears twitched forward.
âDid you hear that, HJ?â asked EJ.
âI think so,â said HJ. âIs it a cry?â
They heard the noise again.
âSomethingâs in trouble,â said EJ. âBut itâs not Trojan.â
âItâs smaller,â said HJ. âWeâve been learning animal noise recognition in training and that is a small animal, probably a baby, in pain.â
Lucinda began to move now, slowly, then she swung her head down, pushing into some long grass.
âI think sheâs found something,â said HJ.
EJ climbed down from Lucinda and shone her torch down through the grasses to see a small baby kangaroo lying in the grass. The joeyâs right leg was limp.
âItâs a joey,â said EJ. âAnd I think itâs broken its leg.â EJ shone her torch out beyond the joey. âThereâs no sign of its mother.â
âWe need to bring it with us,â said HJ. âIt wonât survive out here.â
HJ took a CHARM from her bracelet and twisted. She passed a soft, brown bag down to EJ.
âItâs a baby animal-care pouch,â explained HJ. âIt will keep this little one warm until we can get back to the CAT.â
EJ gently lifted the joey into the pouch and up to HJ and then put her foot back in the stirrup and swung herself back on to Lucinda. She then took the joey and held it nestled in front of her in the pouch. EJ gave Lucinda a little kick to the sides and they walked on.
âWell, we found one animal that needs our help,â said EJ. âBut itâs not the one weâre looking for. Thereâs no sign of Trojan.â
But Lucinda must have sensed something. She flared her
