do this. Mouth shut, Sam. When it’s time for Kaitlyn to find out, you can tell her.
“Hey, Kait,” I greet her cheerily when I enter.
“Hi, Sam. Alex will bring our lunch in when it gets here. I couldn’t decide what I wanted,” she says, looking through some papers.
I was hoping to have a mouthful of food so I didn’t have to talk too much.
    “Sure. No problem.”
Kait finishes her paper shuffling and takes a seat on the couch, “come sit.”
I walk over and sit across from her.
“You seem so quiet today, Sam, are you okay?”
Shit , “yeah. Just a little tired. You know, it’s Monday,” I say, trying to make a joke.
“I know all about Mondays. Looks like you had a very nice weekend,” she says.
“What do you mean?” I ask defensively.
“The flowers. Must have made someone happy.”
    “Oh. It’s nothing…no one,” I stammer.
“Sounds like ‘no one’ is pretty special,” she winks.
“Where is Alex with that lunch? I’m starved,” I say, trying to change the subject again.
“Oh, don’t even want to tell your best friend? Scandalous,” Kaitlyn teases.
“Aw, how sweet, I didn’t know we were BFFs.”
“Don’t try to change the subject. I’m not going to judge you, Sam,” she says in a more serious tone, “but you’ve piqued my interest now by not telling me.”
There’s a knock on the door. It’s Alex with lunch.
“Thanks, Alex,” Kait says. She closes the door and sits back down, “don’t think I forgot.”
    I roll my eyes.
“It’s someone at work, isn’t it?”
The look that passes over my face confirms her suspicions, “the plot thickens. So spill it. Who is it? It’s Ryan isn’t it? I caught him staring at you a few times last week.”
She opens the bag and takes out the lunch boxes as she speaks, “Come on, Sam, you know you’re going to tell me anyway, might as well spill it so we can eat in peace.”
    “Ugh, you’re relentless,” I reply.
“Yeah, well, it’s exciting to me. Being a married woman now, I can live vicariously through you.”
    “Honestly, Kait, it’s complicated.”
“Of course it is. That’s what makes it interesting,” she laughs.
“I don’t even know how to tell you,” I answer, taking a bite of my salad.
    “Just say it.”
“It’s Mason,” I blurt out, surprising myself, but happy to tell someone.
Kaitlyn laughs louder, “come on, Sam, just tell me.”
    “It’s Mason. Mason Grant.”
Kaitlyn puts her fork down, “shut the fuck up.”
“Okay.” I fork another bite into my mouth.
“Sam. You know he’s a snake, right? I mean, you know that. He’s also a billionaire and my boss - our boss.”
    “Like I said, it’s complicated.”
“No shit. I mean, he did always seem to have a thing for you, but I thought it was just because he didn’t get his chance with you before you left.”
“What do you mean?” I ask curiously.
“I mean, he would randomly ask me about you over the years. He always wanted to know what you were doing and that kind of thing.”
I smile to myself. It’s nice to know Mason was thinking of me while I was gone.
“He’s trouble though, Sam. He doesn’t have ‘girlfriends’, he has a different woman every week.”
“It’s not like that,” I say defensively.
“How can you be so sure?”
    “I just know. It’s different. He’s different.”
“Isn’t that part of his game?”
“No. He’s for real.” I’m not even sure if I believe it yet myself, but I feel the need to defend whatever it is that we have.
“I don’t know, just be careful, Sam. Guys like that…”
“I’m a big girl now, Kait.”
“I know, I just don’t want you to get hurt.”
Too late. I’m in too deep not to get hurt at this point. I’m fucked.
“Thanks. I guess it’s true, you really are my best friend,” I say with mock enthusiasm.
We each laugh. I dodged a bullet - for now anyway. I know Kait’s going to be watching my every move now - and Mason’s. She’s going to be
