wonder you have a weight issue.â
âItâs true. I make amazing cookies. You should try some. Chocolate cookies make people smile. You could use a smile,â I say.
I see Sarah stifling a laugh. âDid you like the movie?â Sarah asks me.
âYes. Some of the characters reminded me of people I know. Cleo reminded me a little of you, Zoe.â
Zoe glares at me.
âI have to go, Eve,â says Stephanie. âMy momâs waiting.â
âIâll come with you. See you, Sarah. See you, Zoe and Mia.â
âSee you,â says Sarah, and for the first time since school began Sarah gives me a real smile. Itâs almost a âLetâs be friends againâ smile. I smile back, but I donât know if I can ever be friends with her again.
Stephanie and I look for her momâs car in the parking lot.
âDo you want to come over to my house for supper?â Stephanie asks as her mom drives up.
âSure.â
âGreat,â says Stephanie. âI havenât had a friend over sinceâ¦my dad left.â
âIâm sorry to hear about your dad,â I say.
âItâs okay. I still see him. He called last night, and heâs taking me out for supper next weekend.â
âThatâs terrific,â I say. âBy the way, Iâm glad we went to the movies.â
âMe too. And I really think youâve lost weight, Eve. You donât need to lose all that much anyway. But I bet youâve lost more than two pounds.â
I laugh. âMaybe I haveâbut even if I havenât, I feel good and thatâs better than losing weight. Itâs even better than eating a hot-fudge sundae. And take it from me, thatâs saying a lot.â

chapter one
It was one of those days when you donât even want to step outsideâa bleak and windy Sunday in November. And of course my mom asked me to run to the store. She was craving clam chowder. Clam chowder , of all the stupid things! The New England kind. Not the Manhattan kind. And she wanted it, like, right away.
âThereâs some money in my purse, Claire. Itâs in the hallway on the table.â
She wasnât even looking at me. She was flopped on the sofa with the clicker in her hand, flipping through the channels.
âWhy canât you go, Mom? Iâm kinda busy right now.â Why donât you get out of the house yourself for a change? Youâre getting so fat and lazy! Thatâs what I really wanted to snap back at her. But I didnât want to hurt her feelings. Theyâd been hurt enough lately.
âMy arthritis is acting up again,â she said. âMy feet are killing me.â This was her usual excuse. She used to cope with it and just carry on with her dayâbefore Dad left, that is. Ever since then, sheâd been housebound. And at fifteen, I didnât want a stayat-home mom anymore. She needed to get out and get on with her life. But Dad packed her zest for life into his suitcase
