take an army to eat them all.â As she spoke, Maggie walkedover, twitching the lace curtain aside and staring out over the hills. âYouâre setting yourself up for a disappointment, Brie.â
âAnd youâre determined to get no pleasure out of her coming.â
âHer letter accepting your invitation wasnât filled with excitement and pleasure, was it now?â
Brianna stopped fluffing bed pillows sheâd already fluffed and studied her sisterâs rigid back. âSheâs the odd one out, Maggie. Weâve always had each other, and will still when sheâs gone again. Added to that she lost her mother not a month ago. I wouldnât have expected some flowery response. Iâm happy enough sheâs decided to come at all.â
âShe told Roganâs man she didnât want anything to do with us.â
âAh, and youâve never in your life said something you reconsidered later.â
That brought a smile tugging at Maggieâs lips. âNot that I can recall, at the moment.â When she turned back, the smile remained. âHow much time do we have before we pick her up at the airport?â
âA bit. I need to nurse Kayla first, and I want to change.â She blew out a breath at Maggieâs expression. âIâm not going to meet the sister Iâve not yet set eyes on in my apron and dusty pants.â
âWell, Iâm not changing.â Maggie shrugged her shoulders inside the oversized cotton shirt sheâd tucked into old jeans.
âSuit yourself,â Brianna said lightly as she started out of the room. âBut you might want to comb that ratâs nest on your head.â
Though Maggie curled her lip, she took a glance at herself in the mirror above the dresser. An aptdescription, she thought with some amusement as she noted her bright red curls were snarled and tousled.
âIâve been working,â she called out, quickening her pace to catch up with Brianna at the bottom of the steps. âMy pipes donât care if my hairâs tidy or not. Itâs not like I have to see people day and night like you do.â
âAnd itâs grateful those people are that you donât. Fix yourself a bit of a sandwich or something, Margaret Mary,â she added as she breezed into the kitchen. âYouâre looking peaked.â
âI am not.â Grumbling but hungry, Maggie headed for the bread drawer. âIâm looking pregnant.â
Brianna froze in midstride. âWhat? Oh, Maggie.â
âAnd itâs your fault if I am,â Maggie muttered, brows knitted as she sliced through the fresh brown bread.
Laughing, Brianna swung over to give her sister a hard hug. âWell, now, thatâs an intriguing statement, and one Iâm sure medical authorities worldwide would be interested in.â
Maggie tilted her head, and there was humor in her eyes. âWho just had a baby, I ask you? And who had me holding that beautiful little girl barely minutes after she was born so that I went a bit crazy in the head?â
âYouâre not upset, really, that you might be having another baby?â Brianna stepped back, worrying her lip. âRoganâs pleased, isnât he?â
âI havenât told him yet. Iâm a ways from being sure. But I feel it.â Instinctively she pressed a hand to her stomach. âAnd no, Iâm not upset, Iâm only teasing you. Iâm hoping.â She gave Brianna a quick pat on the cheek and went back to her sandwich building. âI was queasy this morning.â
âOh.â Tears sprang to Briannaâs eyes. âThatâs wonderful.â
With a grunt Maggie went to the refrigerator. âIâmjust loony enough to agree with you. Donât say anything yet, even to Gray, until Iâm sure of it.â
âI wonâtâif youâll have that sandwich sitting down and drink some tea with
