said goodbye. She ran out of the room. Carly raced after her.
Abby slipped back under her quilt. âQuick, close the doorâ she said to Stacy.
Stacy hurried to shut the door. âGood idea. We have to talk.â
âWhatâs up?â asked Abby.
âPromise you wonât tell?â
Abby sat straight up in bed. A secret!
âWell, do you?â Stacy unzipped the pocket on her jacket. She pulled out a piece of paper.
Abby nodded. âI promise.â
She felt like a jitterbox for sure.
FOUR
Abby looked at Stacyâs paper.
There was a tree with a bunch of branches and lines on it.
Stacy pointed to the paper. âDo you know what this is?â
Abby saw the names on the lines. âA family tree?â
Stacy nodded. âItâs for school.â
âWish I could go back soon,â said Abby. âLooks like fun.â
âNot reallyâ said Stacy.
âHow come?â
âI asked my mother, and she didnât know very many names,â said Stacy, sadly.
There were lots of blank lines in the branches on Stacyâs paper.
Just then, someone knocked on the door.
âShh!â said Stacy, sadly. She stuffed the paper into her pocket. âDonât say a word about this.â
Abby nodded. Then she called, âWho is it?â
âShawn,â came the voice through the door. âIs Snow White in there?â
âCome look for your dog if you want,â Abby said.
The door opened. In came Shawn waving a dog collar. âSnow Whiteâgone.â
âAre you sure?â Abby said.
âCarly sayâtime for Snow White to get chicken pox.â Shawn looked worried.
Abby and Stacy giggled.
Shawn looked puzzled. âDogs get pox?â
Abby smiled. âDefinitely not.â
âGood,â said Shawn, smiling.
âMaybe Jimmy took Snow White for awalk. Look for him, and you might find your dogâ Abby suggested.
Shawn held up the dog collar. âTake dog walking without leash? Not smart.â
âYouâre right,â Abby said. She thought about Snow Whiteâs favorite place. âLook in the secret place, behind Carlyâs closet,â she said. âSnow White likes to sleep there.â
âGood thinking,â Shawn said. He turned to Stacy. âStay there. Do not leave soon.â Then he ran out of the room.
Stacy looked surprised. âI wonder what he wants.â
Abby said, âQuick! Show me your family tree again.â
Stacy unfolded the paper. âHurry, I donât want Shawn . . . uh, or anyone to see.â
âWhy not?â Abby asked.
âBecause, I think Iâm adopted.â Stacy looked like she was going to cry.
âYou do?â Abby said, surprised.
Stacy played with the zipper on her jacket.âMy mother canât find my baby pictures. Not a single one.â
Abby scratched the bumps on her feet. âMaybe they got lost when you moved here.â
âThat was a long time ago,â said Stacy.
âWait a minute!â Abby said. âYou canât be adopted. Everyone says your eyes look just like your dadâs.â
âThatâs what my mother says. But I donât remember him. He moved out years ago.â
Abby took a deep breath. She wished Stacyâs father lived at home. Right here on Blossom Hill Laneâthe best cul-de-sac ever!
âI have an idea,â said Abby. âLook at your birth certificate. It will tell you the truth.â
âI tried that,â Stacy said. âMy mother canât find it either.â
Abby frowned. âIs it lost?â
âI told youâI must be adopted,â Stacy said. âJust like your Korean brothers and Snow White and . . .â She stopped.
Abby threw the covers off and scootedacross the bed. She put her arm around Stacy. âAnd what?â
âAnd if itâs true, I donât even know where I came from.â
Abby grabbed a Kleenex box off
