donât think someone like that, an outsider, can crack this case. I need you, both of you.â Simon gave us a pleading look. âSo will you do it?â He got down on his knees. âIâm begging you, please.â
I looked at Jackson, and he shruggedâthat Simon was up to his usual anticsâand said, âUp to you, McQuade.â
âThank you, honey,â I said. âSimon, Iâll help you, of course I will.â
âWhew.â Simon got up. âI was a little worried that you werenât going to have my back on this one.â
Now I gave Simon a âget realâ look. âCâmon, Simon, you knew Iâd help you. Iâm sure Jackson will, too, when he has time away from the animal sanctuary, right, honey?â
Jackson blew out a breath. âSure, Iâve got to protect you from yourself. That goes for both of you.â
Simon put an arm around each of us. âJust what I was hoping for! Itâs the Three Musketeers, together again!â
chapter five
I decided to start the investigation by going back to basics, in this case finding out if David had any enemies. After I was sure everyone was taken care of, I headed over to talk to him. David, wearing a brown corduroy jacket over a faded yellow tee, jeans, and red high-top sneakers, was flirting with Carla Olsen, a petite redhead, and the owner of Sisterhood Wines.
He spotted me and said something to Carla, who moved on. When he turned back to say hi, he almost ran into Lily, who was serving glasses of Falling Leaves .
âSorry, Lily.â
âItâs fine,â she replied frostily. âWine?â
He pointed to his almost-full glass. âIâm good.â He pecked me on the cheek. âWillow, nice party.â
âThanks. Everything okay?â
âYeah, fine.â David watched Lily walk away. I wondered what was going on between themâdid they have a history that I didnât know about?
âI wanted to tell you that Iâve decided to help you and Simon, Jackson, too.â
âWow.â David smiled. âThank you. Thatâs a relief.â
âFirst off, we need to know the basics, like if you have any enemies? Anyone we should talk to or check out?â
âAs you saw at the party, I donât exactly get along with Gerald or my father and brother, but besides them and whoever is sending those texts and e-mails, I donât know.â David shrugged. âI really try to get along with everyone.â
I wondered if this was true, and if he was faithful to his wife, Ivy. âDavid, I know this is probably a touchy subject, but I have to ask. Is there someone else in your life, I mean, besides Ivy. I noticed that you were chatting with Carla and . . .â
âPeople always take it that way.â David sounded frustrated. âI like women, period, but I donât fool around, Willow. Iâm a married man.â
âOkay.â I put my concerns about other women on the back burner for a moment. âSo no one else comes to mind who has a grudge against you or anything?â
He shook his head. âNope.â
âAnd you and Ivy are okay?â I was thinking about the fight Iâd witnessed at the corn maze. âYesterday morning you two seemed upset.â
âWeâre fine, Willow. Donât worry about me tonight, take care of your other guests.â
âI can do both.â I noticed that he wasnât eating. âCan I get you a plate of food?â
His eyes opened wide. âNo, I grabbed something before I came. Iâm feeling a little anxious about eating out after what happened. I mean, Iâm sure the food is fine, but Iâm just being careful.â
âIt is fine, really, David. You should eat. Ivy, too.â
âOh, sheâs eating.â He gestured to Ivy, who was chatting with Simon, in between bites of gnocchi. âSheâs always hungry. Both of them
