cash.â
He had never seen her look happier or more radiant. The mention of ten thousand dollars put a grin on her face that was wonderful to see. âTen thousand dollars? But how?â
âJust to do a little shooting is all,â Frank said.
âFor a show of some kind?â
For the first time, he was hesitant. âNo, not a show exactly.â
He walked over to the window. The main street was alive. He wanted to be down there fancied up this way, people staring at him and knowing who he was.â
Not facing her, he said, âBen Rittenauer and I are going to have a gunfight.â
âFrank, are you kidding?â
She set the flowers down and came over to him. Touched his elbow. He still wouldnât look at her.
âFrank, I asked you if you were kidding.â
âNo, Iâm not kidding.â
âBut Frank, youâre no match for Ben, and you know it.â
Now he looked at her. âHeâs not who he used to be. Heâs getting older.â
âBut so are you.â
He took her arms and pulled her to him. He hugged her. âJust think of all the things we can do with that money.â
âBut Frankââ
âTen thousand dollars, Beth. Weâll go to Chicago and Kansas City andââ
âOh, Frank,â she said, as if she were talking to a little boy with too many fanciful notions. âOh, Frank.â
And then they just stood there a long time, not speaking, Frank thinking of ¿he ten thousand dollars and her thinking how Frank would soon be dead and it would be time to find another man.
Guild found the two of themâBen Rittenauer and Hollisterâin a restaurant. They sat at a table along the wall. Coffee and bacon smelled good on the morning air.
Hollister saw Guild before Rittenauer did; he frowned.
Guild went over anyway and said, âI wouldnât have anything to do with him, Rittenauer.â
Rittenauer looked amused by this. âYou wouldnât, huh? And just who the hell are you?â
Hollister said, âHis name is Leo Guild. Frank Evans took his wife away from him.â
âOh, thatâs right, Guild,â Rittenauer said. He smiled a hard quick smile. âI guess that gives us something in common, losing women to Evans.â
âHollister and his boss donât give a damn whether you live or die. They just want a show put on so all their rich friends can have a laugh.â
âMaybe you should have been a preacher, Guild,â Hollister said.
âMaybe I should have.â
âI donât remember inviting you over, Guild. Why donât you go find a table of your own?â Hollister said. He nodded at Rittenauer. âBen and I were having a nice pleasant talk over a nice pleasant breakfast. Right, Ben?â
Rittenauer looked up at Guild. âThatâs the truth, Guild.â
âMaybe Evans wonât do it,â Guild said. âMaybe heâll be sensible for once.â
âAfraid youâre a little late for that,â Hollister said. âIâve already talked to Evans and heâs delighted with the opportunity.â
Guild said, âYou know damn well Evans doesnât have a chance against Rittenauer here.â
Hollister shrugged. âThatâs the thing about gunfights. Thereâs always a surprise or two. You never quite know for sure whoâs going to win.â
Guild said to Rittenauer, âI suppose youâve been waiting a long time for this.â
âA long time,â Rittenauer said. He studied Guildâs calm face. âYou mean you never thought of killing him yourself?â
âI thought about it.â
âHeâs a little too free with other menâs women.â
âYou make it sound as if the women donât play any part in this. They make choices the same as men do.â
Rittenauerâs face tightened. âI spent a lot of nights thinking about her in his bed. Thatâs not a
