anyway, so I usually go to make sure nothing gets out of hand.
“Why do you doubt I can get Rain?” he asks.
“I don’t know.” I turn and wait for him to quit following me. “She’s classy, man. She’s not your type.”
    “I can do classy.”
“You wouldn’t know what to do with classy.” I throw up my hands. “Go back and invite the other guards. Why are you following me?”
“Are you going to go warn Rain?”
    “No.” Yes, I am.
“Look, just because you aren’t a manslut anymore doesn’t mean you should stop the rest of us.”
So I was a little promiscuous while trying to get over Camille. But it was empty real fast, and instead of filling the emptiness, it had just emphasized it.
“I think you better step off, Chad. I’ll do what I want, I’m still your boss, even if I am your friend,” I say, giving him a light shove.
“You want her for yourself?” He just won’t let it go.
    I glare at him.
    “You do!”
I frown. I can’t deny it in any convincing way. He shakes his head and slings his backpack over his shoulder. “Come on man, if you’d just said so, I mean you can have the first shot. I mean you’d win the bet in a second.”
I clench my fists and then release them. I don’t want to win the bet, but I don’t want anyone else to win either. If only I had staked a claim, maybe the stupid bet would never have happened.
That gives me an idea. Maybe a way to keep the guys off.
    “I am interested.”
“You are?” Chad’s grey eyes search mine. “Man, that changes things.”
“So let the others know,” I say. “She’s off-limits.”
Chad doesn’t look happy as he looks over at the guard room. He isn’t looking forward to telling the others. Lots of them have known me for a long time and went to high school with Camille and I. A weird perk to losing the person who meant more than life to you is that other people seem to support you finding someone new at any cost. Maybe then they don’t have to face you and your pain and see their worst nightmare walking around.
“I’ll tell them.” He scratches his head. “In that case, you might want to bring her to the party. I was kind of joking about making a move, but I know other guys mean it for real. It’s gonna be a bloodbath.”
“Even if you tell them she’s mine?”
“No one’s gonna believe that bro. You haven’t staked a claim on anyone since Camille. You’ve nailed a few chicks but you haven’t been possessive of any of them.”
I try to convince myself it’s because she’s my co-worker and I’m just looking out for her, but he’s right. I’m possessive and it’s definitely odd. I can’t stand the thought of someone else’s hands in her hair, someone else kissing her. I can feel my neck start to burn and adrenaline flood me at the thought. I guess I’ll have to be at the party. Maybe I should make sure she comes with me.
Or maybe I should just stay away.
I pat Chad on the shoulder. “Watch out for her and the other chicks at the party, will you?”
He nods. “You know I talk a big game but I won’t let anything happen.”
I want to believe him, don’t want to make myself Rain’s new bodyguard and make things weird between us, but somehow I can’t put her safety in his five foot ten hands. I’d rather take it in mine. I’d rather take her in my hands.
    “Is she still here?”
He frowns, like he doesn’t want to tell me.
    “Come on, Chad.”
“I think she went to test chemicals. With Nate.”
“She did? Thanks.” I turn my back on Chad and head over to the hot tub. She’s leaning over, watching Nate, our pool tech, pull out water and measure the PH by dropping chemicals in it and holding the color up to a slide of samples.
“So interesting. So basically, I can do this when I’m on shift without calling you over,” she says, leaning over his shoulder.
“Sure, but I’m already here.” Nate looks at her amusedly, curly hair bouncing as he turns. “But I’ve never had a
