powerful as youth itself.Who would have thought he had such strength left in him?â And he walked away quickly.
âIâm not a wizard,â said Sam, âbut I will be one day.â
âYou are already, or you wouldnât know the secrets of the roffles. Thatâs wizard work,â said Megatorine, in a voice so gentle and friendly that Sam told him everything, without stopping to think whether it was a good idea or not.
âWell thatâs easily settled,â said the roffle.
âReally?â
âYou donât need a master,â he said. âThatâs old-fashioned. You can go to a proper place to learn to be a wizard, with lots of others. Besides, thereâs lots of bad magic about these days. Magic that will eat you up if youâre not trained.â
Sam leaned forward, surprised to hear the roffle saying what the wizards had been talking about.
âHow do you know that?â
âRoffles know lots of things. The tunnels in the Deep World link up all over the place. We move where no one sees us.â
âWhere does the bad magic come from?â asked Sam.
âAh, now youâre asking.â
âAnd whatâs the answer?â
âMost things begin with one thing,â said the roffle.
âWhat was the one thing?â
âA cat with a silver knife is one thing.â
âNo, itâs two things,â said Sam.
âSo it is.â
âA silver knife shaped like a cat is one thing.â
âIs it?â
âItâs a knife,â said Sam. âThatâs one thing. But itâs a sort of cat as well, and thatâs another thing. So itâs two things.â
âTwo things can be one thing.â
Sam thought about that.
âWhat was the one thing that started the magic going bad?â he asked.
âIt was a wizard,â said the roffle.
Waterburn
, thought Sam.
âAnd thatâs why youâve got to go to College, to learn properly. You need lots of wizards around you.â
âBut wizards live alone. They guard their secrets. They donât share them like that.â
âOh, itâs secrets you want, is it?â
Sam wished Starback was with him. Somehow, when the dragon was nearby, he seemed to know what to do. This was the longest time they had ever been apart.
âDo you really want to be a wizard?â
âYes.â
âIâll take you, if you like.â
âIs it far?â
âDay and a half. And if you see a memmont on the way, give me a shout.â
âAll right.â
The night was so far on that the road was invisible; even the short path back to it through the trees had curled up on itself and hidden.
âWeâll sleep here first, though,â said Megatorine. âMake us a fire.â
Sam had been longing for a fire, for warmth, and for protection against any creatures of the forest.
âI canât. Iâve no flint.â
âMagic one up for us.â
Sam shook his head. âI canât use the magic for myself,â he explained. âIt would go wrong.â
âThatâs all right. The fire isnât for you. Itâs for me.â
âButââ
âNo buts. No fire, no help. Find the wizard school yourself. Iâm off.â
Sam flicked his fingers and a crackling fire sprang up in the clearing. Megatorine gave him an orange grin. âThatâs more like it,â he said. âI knew it was my lucky day. My own wizard, eh?â
And he curled up tight like a hedgehog and was snoring before Sam even had time to worry about who the fire was for.
Starback had flown back to watch the five wizards leave the house and search for Sam. They all set off in the right way, following the boyâs footsteps as though they were glowing in the dark. Wizard sight sees what has been as well as what is there. But when they reached the first fork in the road, the footsteps went in both
