two,
but nothing more of the machine’s purpose
than can be guessed at from its peculiar shape
    and solitary position
out here where nobody lives or works or ever comes
with only the wolves for company,
howling in the wind that whistles through its delicate wires
           sending us to sleep.

THE KING’S EVIL
There are no kings inside the Gates of Eden
    B OB D YLAN
    Â
    A pox on all kings!
    A N O LD W OMAN, W ATCHING C HARLES II’ S
E NTRY I NTO L ONDON, 1660
And it isn’t a question of money –
how much the monarchy costs –
but they set up a right by assumption,
    by assumption binding posterity
    Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â  And Thomas Paine began
    Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â  the Rights of Man
    Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â  in a room above
    Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â  The Angel Inn, Islington,
    Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â  attacking the very basis
    Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â  of slavery
    Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â  arguing that we are all born free
    Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â  free and equal in rights
    Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â  and have a natural right
    Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â  to free speech, freedom of conscience,
    Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â  life and liberty
Yet we are subject to one family:
    the monarch
and close relatives of the monarch
and the monarch is first and foremost political
    Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â  They sought to suppress
    Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â  the Rights of Man
    Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â  and indicted Paine
    Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â  for seditious libel
    Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â  and Paine fled to France
    Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â  and was tried in absentia
    Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â  and the jury was offered
    Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â  two guineas and dinner to find him guilty
    Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â  and the bookseller Thomas Spence
    Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â  imprisoned for selling the Rights of Man
    America threw off the yoke
of monarchy. France threw off the yoke
of monarchy. But we are ruled over
    Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â  in perpetuity
    Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â  by one family
and this is regarded as normal
    Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â  in a democracy
    bloodlines and blood fascism
    Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â  in a democracy
    destiny written in our veins
    â€˜we high-born ones’, ‘we well-bred
with pure blood and pure breeding’
    â€“ ‘our superior genetics’ 1 –
    Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â  born to rule
    Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â  to master
    No rational basis but blood
    (and some idiot always says:
    Â Â Â Â Â Â  ‘They know how to rule –
    Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â  it’s in their blood’)
But Paine was clear on this:
    Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â  hereditary rule
    Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â  precludes the consent
    Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â  of succeeding generations
    Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â  and the preclusion of consent is
    Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â               DESPOTISM
And the monarch will make retribution
    Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â  the Tower of London
    Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â  once a place of execution
    Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â  and on Tower Bridge strange to see
    Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â  the hair of the head disappear
    Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â  the gristle of the nose consumed away
    Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â  the eye sockets …

    Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â                            All deference is fear
and not meeting the monarch’s eyes
    Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â  is fear and servile fearfulness:
    â€˜To monarchize,
    Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â  be fear’d and kill with
