and corporate law, and the firm had been Dan Lavetteâs lawyers since 1910. It was now known as Goldberg, Benchly and Baxter. As Barbara had, Harvey Baxter had worshipped Sam Goldberg, and he considered Barbara his personal responsibility, inherited from the senior partner.
Now he asked Barbara why she would not come to his office, and she replied that there they would be constantly interrupted.
âOf course not,â Baxter said. âYou know I stop all my calls when you come to see me.â
âWhereas here, my dear Harvey, we are only interrupted by Gino, who tells me how beautiful I am, and today I need that. It is not absolutely the best day of my life. This was handed to me yesterday.â She took the subpoena out of her purse and gave it to him.
Gino hovered over them while Baxter read it slowly and painstakingly. âShall I order for you?â Barbara asked.
âAnything.â
Barbara ordered salad, spaghetti, and veal cutlets. Baxter finished his careful reading and looked at her thoughtfully.
âI read it,â Barbara said.
âThen you know what it is. This is a subpoena to appear in Washington ten days from now to testify before the House Committee on Un-American Activities. Itâs outrageous and, if I may say so, rather disgusting.â
âYou may say so.â
âDid Bernie also receive a subpoena?â
âNo.â
âThatâs very curious.â
âWhy?â
âIsnât it obvious, Barbara? He fought in Spain. That might explain it, the way things are today. But you? Thatâs simply outrageous.â
Barbara shrugged.
âI think Bernie should be included in any discussion of this. If youâre subpoenaed, it stands to reason that he will be.â
âNot really,â Barbara said. âFrom all Iâve read of their methods, they love publicity. No one knows Bernie. Iâm a reasonably well-known writer and Iâm Dan Lavetteâs daughter.â
âThat still doesnât explain anything. Youâre not a communist.â
âI certainly am not.â
âWhat about front organizations? Civil rights? Committees to free Tom Mooneyâthat sort of thing?â
âNo, Iâm not a joiner, Harvey.â
âI very strongly suggest we discuss this with Bernie.â
âHeâs out of town.â
âOut of town? Where? Weâll call him.â
âNo, we canât, Harvey. I donât want Bernie involved in this.â
âWhere is he?â
âIâm sorry. I canât tell you that.â
âDoes he know about this subpoena?â
âNo. And I donât want him to know about it.â
âBarbara, when you appear before the committee, the whole world will know about this.â
âThatâs ten days from now. By then it wonât matter.â
âWhat wonât matter? Must I remind you that I am your attorney, that anything you tell me is privileged?â
âI know that, Harvey,â Barbara said gently. âIâm not trying to keep secrets from you. But I know how you think, and if I tell you where Bernie is, you are going to be so angry and so upset that weâll never make any sense out of this stupid subpoena. I donât want to talk about Bernie. I want to talk about what I am going to do.â
âThatâs very comforting.â
The waiter came with their food.
âNow please eat,â Barbara said. âIâm just starved, and I donât eat out very often these days, and I love the food here, and I wonât feel a bit comfortable if I eat and you donât.â
âYou are an extraordinary woman.â
âNot at all, Harvey, just hungry. Weâll eat, and youâll explain this ridiculous business to me. I read about the writers and directors in Hollywood. Theyâre going to prison, arenât they? Does that mean that Iâll go to prison?â
âNo! For heavenâs sake,
