been a long day, and he can be exhausting. But seriouslyâÂthe reception?â
It was Kateâs turn to let out a sigh, and Jessica eyed her with interest before saying, âTrouble in paradise?â
âNo, not at all,â Kate scoffed. âThe wedding is on schedule to be at the Rose Garden, where we first got married. But the reception is going to be at Carminaâs.â
âYour parents must be thrilled.â
âThey are, but . . . I feel like Tony is settling. Weâre having the rehearsal dinner here, but he would have loved to host the whole thing.â
âThatâs sweet of him,â Jessica said dreamily.
Another single girl in Valentine thinking about true love, Lyndsay thought. Jessica was a few years younger, and Lyndsay almost teased, âWait your turn.â
Lyndsay leaned toward Kate with sympathy. âTony knows logically that there isnât room here. Heâll get over it.â
âI know, but . . . Iâm sort of flattered heâs upset he canât do this for us.â
âNow itâs getting a little overly sappy around here,â Lyndsay said.
Kate laughed. âI know, I know. Itâs not like itâs a major problem, I just . . . worry.â
âAnd itâs sweet,â Lyndsay insisted. âI shouldnât tease you. You know how utterly thrilled I am that you two are back together again.â She glanced at Jessica. âIt was a long nine years, let me tell you.â
Smiling, Kate said, âIt was long. And pointless. I wish Iâd done so many things differently.â She suddenly focused on Lyndsay with that penetrating lawyer stare. âDonât you sometimes wish youâd done that?â
âDonât we all have occasional regrets? Iâm sure you donât regret having me as your maid of honorâÂagain. Not sure what else youâre saying.â Lyndsay thought about her book, and how weird it was going to be to break the news now. She wished sheâd done that differently. But she had to talk about it with her whole family together.
And then there was her teaching career. Sheâd always wanted to teach, and though she loved her kids, it was still shocking and sad that she wasnât content. But what would she have changed?
âWho else would be my maid of honor but my once-Âand-Âfuture sister-Âin-Âlaw?â
The wording was getting to be a joke between them.
Lyndsay looked around her with exaggerated care, then leaned forward so secretively that both Kate and Jessica did the same. âThere is one particular thing Iâd like to do that Iâve never done before.â
When she paused dramatically, Kate said, âDonât keep us in suspense!â
âIâm going to ask Will out on a date.â
Lyndsay spoke just as Kate took a sip of her beer, and Kate coughed, covering her mouth with the back of her hand. Lyndsay chuckled and offered a napkin.
Jessica eyed Lyndsay with interest. âYouâve never dated him? I thought almost everyone in his dating age range had.â
âI know you dated him,â Lyndsay said, then almost wished she hadnât mentioned it. She wasnât sure she wanted to know the details of what had happened between Will and her friend.
Jessica waved a hand. âOnly for a Âcouple weeks. We never evenâÂâ She broke off, wearing a lame smile.
That made Lyndsay feel better. âWhy did you break up?â
âItâs not like we even had anything official enough to warrant a breakup, â Jessica began slowly. âWe just . . . went out a few times and that was that. I think we both found other Âpeople or something. I donât think we had a lot of sparks.â She shrugged. âIt was last year. I barely remember.â
âThen itâs settled,â Kate said happily. âLyndsay should date him. There were a lot of sparks at this
