thereâs only two of us.â
His dark eyes stare me down. âI can count. I can also speculate. And that little numberâtwoâtells me itâll be even harder for you,â he says, shaking his head as he hands me a pool cue. âYouâre on my team. And I canât wait to say I told you so.â
âThatâs what I love about you. The endless well of support.â
âAlways,â he says with a wink. He nods at the table. âYou go first. I need my ringer.â
I say hello to the other guys and then line up my shot. Iâm good at pool. Itâs the focus. The concentration. The same skill set as sewing up a forehead. Yes, I have excellent hand-eye coordination, and it helps me kill it at the pool table. Max is a beast, too, so weâre like the one-two Summers brothersâ punch.
I line up and aim. I send the white ball straight into the purple ball, which races over the felt and rattles neatly into the corner pocket.
âNice one,â Wyatt says from the corner of the table. Earlier, he texted me that his wife, Natalie, would be busy tonight doing wedding prep with Spencerâs wife, Charlotte. Yes, wedding prep . Wyatt and Natalie are already married, but theyâre getting married again. They tied the knot in Vegas a little while ago, but theyâre having a ceremony here in a few weeks for friends and family.
As I walk around the table, looking for the next shot, Wyatt says, âHowâs life with my little sister?â
âGreat,â I say. Because it is.
âWhatâs she up to tonight?â
I pause for a second, unsure if I should say what sheâs doing. âSheâs out.â
Spencer parks his hands around his mouth like a megaphone. âCode word for date.â
Nick straightens his spine and arches a brow at Spencer. âSeriously? My sister does not date.â
Spencer smacks his back. âYup. Just like my sister didnât date,â he says, giving him a sharp I-caught-you stare since Nickâs engaged to Spencerâs sister Harper.
Nick holds up his hands. âFine, fine.â
Spencer pokes Nick with the cue. âGet used to it, buddy. Get used to your sister dating. I had to get used to it with you, of all people.â
I sink my shot, then miss the next one. When Nick takes his turn, Wyatt calls out to me, âWhoâs the lucky guy tonight, and when do we need to beat him up?â
I shrug. âDonât know.â
He stares sharply at me. âYou donât know?â
âDude, Iâm not her keeper.â
âI know, shithead. But you need to look out for her.â Wyatt points his beer bottle at me.
âYeah, because men are pigs,â Max says, weighing in.
We all hold up our beers at that statement.
Later, Wyatt pulls me aside. âSeriously, man. Look out for Josie. She dated some guy last spring who really hurt her.â
Like a chemical reaction, that searing jealousy from earlier transforms into an entirely new substanceâthe wish to hurt this guy. âWhoâs this assfuck? The guy sheâs out with tonight? Henry?â
Wyatt shakes his head and blows out a long stream of air. âNot Henry. I donât have all the details. She told Natalie, but basically this guy she met online totally wooed her, and when they met in person it was clear all he wanted was . . .â
I clench my teeth. âFuck, I hate douches.â
âYeah, me too.â
âWhat happened?â
âHe blew her off after he got what he wanted.â
âClassic dick move.â
âClassic,â Wyatt agrees. âI swear if she had told me who he was Iâd probably have killed him, and itâs not even like he committed the worst dating sin ever. But he hurt my sister. Ergo . . .â
âYou want to kill him,â I supply.
âI hate people who hurt my sister. I need you to watch out for her. Just like Iâd do for Mia if you needed
