toward the door.
âIâm sorry if I made us late,â Ellie apologized, a little confused by the rush. She grabbed her new room key from the table by the door as he herded her by it.
Lou snorted a laugh. âWeâre not late. Cal just likes to stick to a schedule.â Her voice lowered to a stage whisper. âHeâs a little anal.â
Callumâs directing hand swung toward Louâs butt, connecting with a smack that made her yelp and jump out of range. She sent a glare his way, but her laugh bubbled out, ruining her show of disapproval.
They headed for Callumâs pickup, and Lou climbed into the backseat, despite Ellieâs protestations.
âYouâre already doing so much,â Ellie said, reluctantly sitting in the front passenger seat when Lou didnât budge. âYou donât even know me, and youâre still going out of your way to help.â
Leaning between the front seats, Lou gave Ellieâs shoulder a light bump with her fist. âWeâre not doing that much. Besides, until you arrived, our investigation into Willardâs death had pretty much reached a standstill. The whiteboard hadnât seen any action for a while. Helping you fits right into what we were doing anyway.â
âBut mapping the cabin and taking off work so you can help me arrange a guideâ¦â Ellie shook her head. âThatâs going above and beyond. So, thank you. I really appreciate it.â
âDonât count your guide until heâs hatched out of his grumpy, monosyllabic egg,â Lou warned.
After struggling with that for several seconds, Ellie finally asked, âWhat?â
Callum gave an amused cough. âShe means that itâs likely George wonât agree to be your guide.â
âBut heâs a search and rescue volunteer, right? Doesnât that mean he likes to help people?â Even as she said the words, Josephâs image popped into her head, and she shuddered.
âYes, but I heard it was like pulling teeth to get him on the team.â Lou was leaning so far forward between the seats that she was level with Callum and Ellie.
Giving her an irritated glance, Callum snapped, âSparks, sit back and put on your seat belt.â
His sharp tone wouldâve made Ellie scramble to do his bidding, but Lou just rolled her eyes. âWeâre a block away from Leviâs. Just donât crash the truck, and Iâll be fine. Actually, please donât crash the truck, since itâs currently our only mode of transport.â
âYou donât have a car?â Ellie asked. In the city, with the public transportation, being vehicle-less was doable. In the mountains, though, it would be almost impossible not to have a car.
âI did. It was a lovely truck, but it burned.â
That was unexpected. Callum was parking the pickup as Ellie replied, âBurned? In an accident?â
âNo. It was definitely on purpose.â
âWhat happened?â Mountain living was apparently more treacherous than Ellie had imagined.
Lou made a face. âUgh. Stupid Clay happened. Homicidal, arsonistic stalker.â
âI donât think arsonistic is a word.â Callumâs voice came from Ellieâs open door, and she jumped. Caught up in Louâs abbreviated tale, she hadnât notice him circling to her side of the truck.
âIt should be,â Lou said as Ellie hurried to climb out of the pickup. Callum caught her arm to steady her as she landed on the ground, but her new boots were a huge improvement on her high-heeled booties. She didnât even slip at all that time. Ellie stepped aside so Callum could help Lou out of the truck.
âHomicidal?â Ellie picked out what she felt was the most critical part of Louâs explanation. âDo you think he was the one who killed Mr. Gray?â
âNope. Clay just tried to kill Callum and me. The timeline wasnât right for him to
