started.
He put a hand on my shoulder. âIâve got something much more important to think about, Bernie.â
More important than my yearbook picture?
What could that be ?
Chapter 4
âACK. ACK. ACK.â
Blower picked up a bottle from the table and took a long drink from it. He made a face. âThis root beer tastes funny.â
âIt isnât root beer,â I told him. I took the bottle and read the label. âIndia Black Ink.â
âACK. ACK. ACK.â Blower grabbed his throat and started hacking and coughing and sputtering.
âYou should probably see the nurse,â I said. âYouâre gonna scare people with that black tongue.â
âACK. ACK. ACK.â
I picked up the root beer bottleânext to thebottle of inkâand took a slurp. âBut before you go,â I said, âcan we talk about my photo?â
âACK. ACK. ACK.â
He â ack edâ for another five or six minutes. Then he did some very loud spitting into a wastebasket.
Finally he sat down. âI think Iâm back to normal,â he said. His lips were black, and so were his teeth.
âLookinâ good,â I said.
Why worry the poor guy?
âAbout my yearbook photoâ¦â I started.
âNot now,â Blower said, shaking his head. âIâm totally thinking about one thing. The Most Popular Rotten Egg.â
I stared at him. âThe what ?â
âThe yearbook is a hundred years old,â he said. âBack then they had the Most Popular Rotten Egg page. They picked the most popular Rotten Student of the year, and the student was named Most Popular Rotten Egg. The student got a whole page in the yearbook all to himself. For the yearbookâs hundredth birthday, weâre bringing back the tradition.â
âWow! Thatâs excellent!â I cried. I slapped Blower on the back. âThis is so sudden. I didnât evenknow you were thinking of me. But I gladly accept. Shall we take the picture now?â
He stuck out his tongue. âIs my tongue black?â
âMaybe a little,â I said. âIâm so excited about the Rotten Egg award.â
âBernie, I havenât decided who wins it,â Blower said. âItâs a big responsibility. Iâm taking it very seriously.â
âYou wonât be sorry,â I said. âIâm too modest to say it, but everyone knows that Bernie B. is the most popular dude around here.â
âI have to take my time and think hard about it,â Blower said. âAnd I have to discuss it with Mr. Pupipantz, the yearbook adviser.â
âI can pose tomorrow afternoon,â I told him. âLet me get a haircut first. Thatâll give you time to talk it over.â
Blower scratched his head. âIâm not so sure youâre the winner, Bernie. After all, Sherman Oaks just gave me this video iPod with two hundred movies. That makes him very popular with me!â
I gasped. That spoiled rich kid Sherman Oaks was up to his old tricks.
âBlower,â I said, âyou wouldnât take a bribeâ would you?â
He rolled the video iPod around in his hand. âOf course not,â he said. âBut I like that guy Sherman. He has a lot of class.â
âButâbutââ I sputtered.
âIâm keeping an open mind,â Blower said. âAnyone who wants to be Most Popular Rotten Egg must prove that he or she is the most popular kid at school.â
I squinted at him. âProve it? How?â
Before Blower could answer, Mr. Pupipantz clomped into the room. Heâs a big, red-faced dude with a shiny bald head. Heâs shaped exactly like a bowling ball but a lot heavier. He always wears these tight sweaters that donât fit and show off about two inches of his hairy belly.
âHi, Mr. Pupipantz,â I said. I flashed him my best smile. âLeif and I were just talking about how popular I
