people sheâd met here. She liked her boss and her coworkers. A bigger apartment might be nice at some point so she could get a larger kitchen, but she was pretty happy with what she had right now.
She heard Jessie J singing again as Kyleâs phone rang. Heâd left it on the kitchen counter. âKyle?â she called out. âWant me to answer it?â
âYeah,â he shouted back.
She hit Talk and the speaker function. âHello, Kyleâs phone.â
She heard male laughter at the other end of the phone and two voices asking her questions.
âHello there. This is Drew McCoy. Is Carlson around?â
A deeper, rumbling voice chimed in: âLooks like someone has a date, McCoy.â
âAw, hell. Maybe we shouldnât tell her all his bad habits right away, huh?â
âHeâs in the next room. Just one moment, please,â Sophie said.
âJust a second,â the guy with the deep voice said. âWhatâs your name?â
If these guys had Kyleâs personal phone number, they were most likely friends. In other words, they were okay to talk with. âIâm Sophie,â she said. âI went to high school with him.â
âAhhh,â the guy she now knew as âMcCoyâ said. âHigh school sweethearts.â
âIâm gettinâ all choked up here,â the guy with the deep voice said. âSophie, Iâm betting you know stuff about him weâre dying to know. Tell us all about it. You can trust us.â
âThatâs right. Weâre completely trustworthy,â McCoy said.
Sophie heard feminine laughter and a womanâs voice in the background. âSophie, Iâm Derrickâs wife, Holly. Theyâre not trustworthy at all. Donât believe them.â
Kyle rounded the corner from the living room and grinned at her. âWelcome to my life,â he said. He held out his hand for his phone. âWhat the hell are you guys up to today? And hey, Holly. How are you doing?â
âJust fine, Kyle. Thank you for asking. Iâll let Derrick tell you why weâre bugging you on vacation.â
âYouâre not bugging me. Call anytime. Hell, you know thereâs always room here for you if you decide youâve had enough of that guy,â Kyle said.
The guy with the deep voice must be Derrick , Sophie thought.
âMy beautiful wife is staying right here, Carlson. With me. Find your own damn wife. Speaking of a âwife,â whoâs Sophie?â
âYeah. Does she know about you yet? Iâll bet Morrison would be more than happy to be introduced.â
âMorrison isnât old enough to shave yet,â Kyle said.
âIâm sure he could get the job done,â McCoy chimed in. âIn the meantime, we have a job for you. What are you up to in the next couple of weeks?â
âAs little as possible. Why?â Kyle said.
âI promised Michael that Holly and I would chaperone his senior prom.â
âAnd youâre running off to Hawaii or something instead.â
âOh, hell no. Weâll be back in Noel for the team stuff, but not that day. Weâre having an ultrasound in Seattle, and itâs not possible to reschedule,â Derrick said.
âIs something wrong? Hollyâs not sick, is she?â Kyleâs brows puckered in concern.
âSheâs pregnant. And no, weâre not naming it after you.â
Sophie saw a huge grin spread over Kyleâs face. âCongratulations, man. Thatâs incredible.â
âIt is,â Derrick said. âIâm a lucky man. The mamas and my grandma are so happy too. Hollyâs not feeling the best right now, but the doc says sheâll be much better in a month or so.â
âIâve been giving Collins some pregnancy advice,â McCoy chimed in.
âThe hell you have. Do you know what he told me? âTell her sheâs beautiful and donât be
