volunteer anything.
However, Laurel did. âTheo and my father were involved in several business deals. Major ones. And some of the investors pulled out when I broke off the engagement.â
All right. Now,
that
was motive.
âHow big were these business deals?â Jericho asked.
âMillions,â Laurel provided.
Yeah, definitely motive.
âA misunderstanding, thatâs all,â Theo insisted. âA few of the investors were worried that I didnât have Herschelâs backing. I do. And once thatâs made clear, then theyâll pony up the money again.â
âSo, youâve got Herschelâs backing even if heâs trying to murder the woman you want to marry?â Jericho concluded.
âMy mother accused Herschel of wrongdoing. You didnât hear that from me. And you wonât,â Theo added. âBecause I donât believe Herschel would do anything like this.â
Interesting. Dorothyâs reaction was interesting, as well. She turned those frosty eyes on her son.
âIf Herschelâs not behind this, then who is?â Jericho asked Theo.
âYou and your family maybe,â Theo answered. âFrom everything Iâve heard, none of your siblings or your mother wants you involved with Laurel.â
They didnât. But Jericho had no intention of admitting that to this beefed-up jerk. He tapped his badge again. âIâm a lawman. My brothers are all lawmen, too. That means weâre not into attempted murder or other assorted felonies. Now, talk. If not Herschel, then who? And this time, I want your answer to make sense.â
Theoâs mouth tightened. âYouâd have to ask Laurel. I suspect she was involved with someone else, or she wouldnât have ended our engagement. Someone whoâs angry enough to want her dead.â
Laurel cursed, something heâd rarely heard her do over the years. âThere was no one else.â
âRight.â Theo shot Jericho a glare.
âIt appears youâve got something to say to me?â Jericho challenged.
Oh, Theo wanted to say plenty, all right, but Jericho saw the moment the man reined in his manicured claws.
Dorothy, however, appeared to be sharpening hers. âWhen you look at other suspects, look at a businessman named Quinn Rossman.â
The very man involved in the money laundering scheme that Herschel was trying to use to have Laurel arrested. Theo clearly knew the name, too. Clearly didnât like his mother mentioning it, because he glared at her.
A glare that the woman ignored. âRossmanâs the one whoâll take the biggest financial loss because of these failed deals,â Dorothy added.
So, the claws werenât for Jericho but for this Quinn Rossman.
Laurel nodded. âQuinn Rossman will lose several of those millions, but like everyone else involved in this, I havenât found anything to link him to whatâs going on with the attacks.â
âThen, keep looking,â Dorothy insisted. âYou donât have to worry about his moron of a partner, Diego Cawley. He doesnât have the stones or the brains to do something like this.â
âMom,â Theo whispered. And it was indeed a warning. âYouâve said enough.â
Jericho didnât agree. He wanted to hear a whole lot more. âYou seem to know plenty about these two, Rossman and Cawley. How much do you know about their money laundering deal?â He stared at Dorothy, waiting for an answer.
âShe knows nothing about that,â Theo snapped, and he took his motherâs arm. âIf you want to question us further, then contact our attorney.â He rattled off his lawyerâs name and left, practically dragging his mother with him.
âWant me to stop them?â Mack asked.
Jericho gave it some thought, and while it would give him some instant gratification to grill Theo like a common criminal, he wasnât likely to
