gave Chloe a jaunty wave and disappeared behind a potted plant.
âWhatâs up?â Quinn asked.
Chloe brushed a hand over the crisp white cuff of Quinnâs shirt. âDonât look now, but weâve been spotted by Monique Hightower. Did you know she works here?â Theyâd gone to school with Monique. The woman never met a secret she wouldnât share with the whole town.
âUh-oh.â He pretended to look worried. âLike I said the other night, itâs Justice Creek. You go out with me, everyone in town is bound to know.â
Now she brushed the back of his hand, which was warm and tan and dusted lightly with brown hair. It felt so good to touch him. She had to watch herself or sheâd be all over the poor guy. âI hope you donât mind that the gossip mill will be churning.â
âMe?â He gave a low chuckle. âI think I can deal with it.â
âSuch a brave man...â
They shared one of those looks. Long. Intimate. Wonderful. Finally, he said, âRead your menu, Chloe.â
She closed the blue folder. âI did.â
âYou know what you want?â
âOh, yes, I do.â She said it slowly, with a lazy smile.
He warned low, âKeep looking at me like that and we wonât make it through the appetizer.â
But they did. They had it all. Appetizers, a nice bottle of cabernet, salad, hammer steaks with cheesy potatoes and a decadent chocolate dessert. And they took their sweet time about it.
Monique dropped by their table around nine, just after theyâd been served their coffee and dessert. âChloe. Quinn. What a surprise.â
Quinn asked, âSo, howâs life treating you, Monique?â
âIâm getting by.â Monique tossed her topknot of curly blond hair and stuck her hands in the pockets of her black service apron. âWhen did you two start spending time together?â
Chloe sipped her coffee. âThis is our first date. Iâm having a fabulous time.â
Quinn said, âChloe always had a thing for me, since way back in high school.â
Monique blinked three times in rapid succession. âReally?â
Chloe stifled a silly giggle and said with great seriousness. âI finally got up the nerve to tell him.â
And to show him, as a matter of fact
. âAnd then he asked me out. The rest could be history. I mean, if I play my cards right.â She lowered her voice to a whisper. âBut, Monique...â
Monique leaned a little closer. âWhat?â
âDonât say a word to anyone.â
âOh. Never. I would never tell a soul...â Translation: she couldnât wait to tell the world. Monique asked about Prime Sports, and Quinn gave her a card good for a free visit and one class of her choice. And then she turned to Chloe again, her dark eyes sharply gleaming. âI was so surprised when you moved back to town. I mean, we all knew you were headed for great things. No one ever would have guessed youâd end up running back home to Justice Creek. Iâm just so
sorry
that things didnât work out for you.â
Six months ago, Chloe would have been shamed and infuriated by Moniqueâs barbed words and pretended concern. Or at the very least, embarrassed. At the moment, though, all she felt was amused. âThanks, Monique. Youâre all heart.â
Monique sighed heavily. Across the room, the manager whoâd greeted them when they arrived had his eye on her. âWell, good to see you two. Gotta go.â She scuttled off.
Chloe took a bite of her delicious dessert. âEverything we told her will be all over town. Twenty-four hoursâthirty-six, max.â
Quinn leaned closer and spoke low. âMaybe I shouldnât have said that you had a thing for me in high school.â
She met his eyes directly and she couldnât keep from grinning. âAre you kidding? I loved it. Not to mention it was the truth. If
