wrong.
âYou said it was an accident, too,â she whispered, her throat constricted.
Catherine suddenly reached for her small beaded evening bag, and she pulled a tissue out and dabbed her eyes. âI need that drink, Cassandra. Please.â
The bedroom door opened and Tracey rushed in; Cass took one look at her sisterâs tight expression and she knew that fireworks were imminent. She rushed to her. âTrace,â she began. Hoping to warn her sister to lay off because Catherine was not well.
âWhat have you both done?â Tracey cried, hands on her hips. âMy God! How could you!â
Catherine straightened.
Cass intercepted her. âWhatever you are upset about, this is not a good time. Catherine isnât feeling well. Letâs go.â She grabbed Traceyâs arm, but her sister did not budge. âSupperâs about to be served. We need to go downstairs.â
Tracey was flushed, and she shook Cass off. âAntonio said heâs leaving. He said he has somehow upset Aunt Catherine, and that it would be better if he stayed elsewhere tonight. Heâs going back to London!â Tracey regarded Cass with such a look of disbelief it was almost comical. But Cass also saw the genuine hurt in her blue eyes. âI canât believe this!â
Cass bit her lip. âIâm sorry,â she began, meaning it. âYou can see him in Londonââ
âI wonât have it! This is my affair. My night. My life.â She looked at Catherine. âAnd my boyfriend. How could you be so rude to him!?â she cried.
Cass stiffened. âAre you sure his leaving is our fault?â
Traceyâs eyes darkened. âJust what the bloody hell are you implying?â
Before she could respond, Catherine stood. âTracey, you must trust me, this is for the best. Let him go. You cannot be involved with him. Terrible things will happen, I am so sure of itâand I am so afraid for you, for all of us.â
Traceyâs eyes widened; so did Cassâs. âNot be involved with him? I love him! Iâm going to marry him,â she declared. She turned to Cass. âI donât know what youâre thinking. But you and Aunt Catherine did or said something to make him decide to leave. I had nothing to do with it.â
Cass felt her heart skipping a series of beats. Was Tracey being literal? Were they engaged? An image flashed through her mind, of Tracey and
Antonio together on their wedding day. Cass could not shove it aside, for Alyssa was with them, as the flower girl. Cass stared. âYouâre getting married?â She could hardly get the words out.
âWell, we havenât exactly made plans,â Tracey began, and Cass didnât really hear the rest of her sentence, she was so relieved.
They would not take Alyssa away from her.
âCass? Are you even listening? I love Antonio,â Tracey was saying. âBut you always take Aunt Catherineâs side.â
âTracey, I understand,â Cass said quickly, unable to believe how shaken she had been, and all for no real reason. âLook, Iâm not always taking Catherineâs side, but maybe itâs better if Antonio doesnât spend the night here. Catherine really isnât well.â
Immediately tears came to Traceyâs eyes. âYou want to boot him out, too? If he leaves, I leave,â Tracey cried, suddenly furious. âAunt Catherine, this is absolutely unfair.â
Cass grew angry. âTracey, canât you cut Aunt Catherine some slack?â she asked. âDoes everything always have to be your way?â
Tracey gaped at her. âAlways my way? Nothing is ever my way! I come home and get pounced on by all of you, the moment I step in the door. Nothing I do is ever right.â
âWhat?â Cass gasped.
âNo.â Catherine stood. She was trembling. âStop it. The two of you. Stop it now. And listen to me. Tracey, I do not
