wanting any rules?â
âIt means Iâm going to stop putting St. John Electronics first. Iâm going to stop trying to be the son my father neverhad. Iâm going to stop doing whatâs expected of me and do what I want to do!â She paused, then plunged on. âFirst thing tomorrow, Iâm going to get a job.â
He stared. âWhat do you mean, youâre going to get a job?â
âWell, I canât presume on your hospitality forever.â
âAmen to that,â he muttered. âBut you canât get a job. You donât live here.â
âI think I might.â
âWhat!â The feet of the chair hit the floor with a crash.
Sydney shrugged. âWhy not? I have talent. I have skills.â
âOh, yes? Knowing which fork to use is a great talent. Can you arrange a charity luncheon with one hand tied behind your back?â
âI could. If I wanted to. As it happens, I have other duties. I am in the upper management of St. John Electronics!â She paused. âOr I was,â she reflected.
âDonât quit on our account!â
âIâm not. Iâm quitting for me.â
Hugh shook his head. âThis is insane. You canât just quit your job and move to an island youâve never seen.â
âOf course I can. And Iâve seen quite a lot of the island. You drove me all the way across it.â
âIn the dark. You donât know anything about it.â
âI donât need to know anything about it. Not yet. It isnât the island I need to learn aboutâitâs me!â
Hugh put his head in his hands.
âDonât be melodramatic,â Sydney said. âIt isnât going to hurt you. It might even be good for you,â she added thoughtfully.
Hughâs head jerked up. âWhat the hell does that mean?â
She shrugged, unconcerned. âNothing. Much.â
He narrowed his gaze. âIf youââ
âOh, get over it. I just need to prove myself. And getting a job here will do that. Iâm perfectly capable of running abusiness, for goodnessâ sake. I ran St. Johnâs while Daddy was recovering from his heart attack.â
âYeah, right.â
Fire flashed in her eyes. âIt didnât run itself for eight months, no matter what my father thinks!â
âYou ran it and he never noticed?â Hugh said sarcastically.
âThe doctors told me not to bring it up. Every time I mentioned St. Johnâs, my father would get agitated. âWho was taking care of business?â heâd ask. And if I tried to assure him I was, he got even more upset.â She gripped her coffee mug so tightly her knuckles grew white. âWho was taking care of me, heâd ask. My father thinks women need to be taken care of. Always. So I stopped talking about it. I just did what needed to be done. I thought heâd understand when he got back to work that things hadnât just run themselves.â She shook her head. âThe more fool I.â
She picked up another chicken wing and ran her tongue over her lips. Inwardly Hugh groaned.
âAll right, donât believe me,â Syd said, misunderstanding the reason for his moan. âBut Iâve done all Iâm going to do for St. John Electronics. Iâve got talents. Iâve got capabilities. I can manage someone elseâs company! I just need someone to hire me.â
Hugh shook his head. âJust like that,â he said dryly.
âWhat do you mean, just like that?â
âThere arenât a lot of jobs for managing directors on Pelican Cay. Weâve got a population of somewhere around fifteen hundred, give or take a parakeet or two.â
âWell, Iâm sure someone will hire me.â
âIâm not.â Hugh was adamant about that. âYou might be the greatest thing since sliced bread, but we donât need you on Pelican Cay.â I particularly
