up from the chair and run out of the restaurant.
âI have an idea,â he said. Her head jerked up. Sheâd stopped running her fingers through the horizontal fabric tucks in the waist of her dress. âMaybe we should pretend that weâve never met before, that Iâm Grant, who works in a cubicle somewhere, and youâre Daisy, who works for the business next door. What do you think?â
âIâd like that,â she said. âI wasnât sure if you wanted to talk about your job or not. You probably get sick of people asking you about it.â
âI donât mind so much,â he said. âThereâs other stuff to talk about, though, and Iâd like to get to know you. What do you like to do when youâre not flying?â He leaned forward a bit more. A few seconds later, he saw her lean forward too.
âI enjoy a lot of different things, but I have to be able to schedule around being here or not do them. Iâm in a womenâs soccer league. I try to get a certain schedule so I can play in games, but sometimes I canât. My teammates are understanding about it. I worry theyâre not happy I canât be at every game.â She shrugged a little. âI run. I tried rock climbing a couple of months ago. Iâm still not sure about that one.â
âWhat didnât you like about it?â
âIâm afraid of heights.â
âBut you fly for a living.â
âI donât really think about being up that high when Iâm flying,â she said. âIt doesnât seem to bother me as much. Iâm not staring out the window or anything.â She took a sip of water. âI work with a guy who became a flight attendant because he was scared to fly.â
âYouâre kidding me,â he said.
âNo. It took him a few flights, but now heâs the guy helping the passengers calm down when things get bumpy.â She smiled at what must have been a private memory. âMost passengers hold it together, but Iâve worked flights before when someone had a real meltdown.â
âHow do you all handle it?â he said.
âThe bumpy stuff?â she said. âThe flight I was on with you guysâthat was scary. The only reason I wasnât freaking out right along with you was Iâve flown with that pilot a hundred times before. He started out flying in the military, and then he flew bush planes in Alaska. Heâs seen every situation that can happen with a plane, up to and including losing more than one engine.â She let out a sigh. âTurbulence is like hitting a bad patch of road in the car. Itâs a case of taking a deep breath and remembering that the pilots know what theyâre doing, they have the guys in the tower and the weather stuff right in front of them, and theyâll divert to another airport if thereâs really a problem.â She glanced at him again. âSee? Iâm talking about work. Maybe we should talk about what you like to do when youâre not working in that cubicle you mentioned earlier.â
The server arrived at the table and took their order. Mostly, Grant wanted the guy to walk away so he could chat with Daisy some more.
âAre you as hungry as I am?â she said to him.
âAbsolutely,â he told her. âSpeaking of things I like to do, Iâve always been fond of eating.â
âDo you know how to cook?â
âOh, hell no,â he said, and he was rewarded with the sweet sound of her laughter. âWell, I really canât say that. I can cook enough to feed myself, but anything more involved doesnât happen. I get some of those pre-made meals delivered each week. The rest of the time, I go out.â
âWould you like to learn to cook?â
âAre you offering, Daisy?â
âIâm not an expert, but I can teach you to boil water and make toast,â she said.
âSounds like fun. If we
