ya, and not cheap.â
If he had them, they were well hidden, but for Abbyâs benefit I couldnât take his word for it. I was probably going to have to let Jerry squeeze him.
âAll right,â I put my hand on the envelope, âIâll give you a thousand dollars for these.â
âYou gotta be kiddinâ me,â he said, scoffing. âThese shots are worth more than a thousand bucks if I wanna shop âem around.â
âThen why havenât you shopped them?â
âI was waitinâ.â
âFor what?â
âI figured maybe the kid would become a movie star,â he said. âTheyâd be worth more then.â
âFifteen hundred,â I said.
Irwin smiled then.
âShe wants âem, huh?â he asked. âShe told you to buy âem, even if they werenât nudies.â
I didnât answer.
âTen grand,â he said. âTake it or leave it.â
I thought I could get him down to the five she gave me, and was still convinced he had nudes. If I was going to give Jerry his chance to squeeze Irwin, this was it.
âOK,â I said.
âYou got it with you?â His eyes glittered.
âNo, she didnât give me that much.â
âHow much did she give you?â
âNever mind,â I said. âYou want ten grand, Iâll get you ten grand.â
âWhen?â
âTomorrow.â
âMeet me here.â
âI donât like it here,â I said, looking around.
âWhy not?â he asked. âWhatâs wrong with this place?â
âThe beer sucks.â He looked at my mug, which I hadnât even lifted yet. âIâll call you at your studio tomorrow and tell you where.â
âOh, no,â he said, âI pick the place.â
âIf you want ten grand,â I said, âthen I pick it.â
He thought about that a moment, then reached out, put his hand on the envelope and slid it back to his side of the table.
âYeah, OK, call me. But when we meet, you better have the dough with you.â
âIâll have it.â
âTen thousand.â
âThatâs what we just said.â
âOK,â he said, sliding out of the booth. âCall me, or these might find a new home.â He fanned himself with the envelope.
âBarney,â I said, âdonât make me regret being nice to you.â
SIXTEEN
O utside of Clipperâs, I looked for Jerry, but if he was there he was better at blending in than Danny was.
Speak of the devil, Danny came walking out of the bar. I headed for my car, got behind the wheel and waited for him to join me.
âThatâs a great disguise,â I said, when he slid into the passenger seat. âWhy didnât you shoot off some flares, while you were at it?â
âSee,â he said, âthis is why Iâm the pro and youâre the pit boss. When people see a shirt like this, they rarely look at your face. Admit it, when you walked in you didnât see me right away.â
âNever mind that,â I said. âHe didnât have the right photos.â
âI noticed you let him keep the envelope.â
âWe made a deal for ten grand,â I said. âIâm supposed to meet with him tomorrow.â
âWhere?â
âI havenât decided,â I said. âSomeplace . . . quiet.â
âQuiet?â
âYeah, Iâm going to have Jerry with me,â I said. âI think I might let him ask Irwin about the photos one more time.â
âAsk?â
âAsk.â
âAh,â Danny said, âsomeplace quiet.â
âYes.â
âMaybe I can come up with something. You think Irwin will show?â
âHe will if he wants his ten grand.â
âWhere is the big guy?â Danny asked. âI know he wouldnât let you come here alone.â
âHeâs around here somewhere,â I said,
