am a Snow-bot!
On the other handâ¦she looked ahead. Sydney had almost made it to the bottom of the hill. Kate had almost caught up with her when something caught her attention. âLook out!â
Kate swerved to the right to avoid hitting a baby fawn. She tumbled head over heels, hollering the whole way.
Thump!
She ran straight into Sydney, who also took a tumble. Thankfully, Kate wasnât hurt. But when she looked up, Sydney was sitting in the snow, holding her ankle.
âOh man!â Sydneyâs eyes glistened with tears.
âWhat is it?â Kate asked, drawing close.
Sydney groaned. âMy ankle hurts. I guess I twisted it.â
âHow bad is it?â Kate knelt down in the snow, shivering from the cold. âIs it my fault? Did I hit you with my skis?â
âNo, you didnât hit me. Itâs my own fault. I wasnât paying attention.â
âIs it really bad?â
âI think I can walk on it.â Sydney took a few steps, groaning the whole way. Each step looked more painful than the one before it.
âDo you think itâs broken?â Kate asked.
Poor Sydney!
âNo. Itâs just twisted. Iâm sure itâll be fine. When I get back to the inn, Iâll put some ice on it and elevate it.â After a few more steps, Sydney added, âSure hope this doesnât keep me from being in the competition.â
âWeâll pray about that,â Kate said. âThe Lord knows you need that money for the mission trip. Heâs going to provide it one way or another.â
Mrs. Oliver arrived. She took one look at Sydney and apologized. âIâm sorry we got separated! I made it down around the next curve before I realized you werenât with me. I took a little tumble, then came back up to look for you.â She looked at the tears in Sydneyâs eyes and gasped. âHave you hurt yourself, honey?â
âA little,â Sydney said. âMy ankle hurts. I donât think itâs very bad, but we should probably go back to the inn, just in case.â
She hobbled beside Kate as they walked back to the car. Just as the girls reached the parking lot, Michael passed by. He gave them a funny look, but kept walking without speaking a word.
âHey, thereâs Michael again.â Kate watched as he disappeared into a crowd of people.
Something about that boy seemsâ¦weird
. Just as quickly, she was reminded not to judge him before knowing all the facts.
âHeâs really going to beat me now, especially if Iâm injured.â Sydney groaned.
âDonât talk like that!â Kate said. âYouâll be fine. And you were almost to the bottom of the hill when I knocked you down. Itâs wasnât your fault.â
âNo, you donât understand. It was already hurting before that. When I rounded the first turn, I think I twisted it!â
âWhen we get back to the inn, weâll elevate your ankle,â Kateâs mom said. âIâm sure itâll be fine in no time.â
They drove back to the inn, where Aunt Molly greeted them with hot chocolate and peanut butter cookies, straight from the oven. She scolded Sydney, her gray curls bobbing up and down. âSydney, you need to be careful! You could have hurt yourself out there.â
âOh, Iâm fine.â She forced a smile, but Kate could tell her friend was really in pain.
âStill, Iâve been skiing for years and Iâve never gotten hurt before.â Sydney groaned. âIt would have to happen the day Iâm trying to teach Kate.â
âIâm not a very good student.â Kate shrugged. âIâm the reason she fell in the first place.â She buried her face in her hands, trying to stop the tears. âI told you I was no good at sports!â
âOf course you are! You were doing a great job,â Sydney said. âAnd I think you would have passed me,
