âYou pay me now?â
âYou did your job,â Clint said. âIâll pay you now.â
Sun Horse reined his horse in. Clint went a few more feet before he realized the man had stopped. He turned and looked at him.
âYou mean right here, in the middle of the street?â he asked.
âI do not like the law,â Sun Horse said. âI donât want to go to the sheriffâs office.â
Clint rode back to Sun Horse, reached into his pocket, and pulled out some money. He counted out the amount they had agreed upon into Sun Horseâs hand. The Cherokee then nodded and tucked the money away in his war bag.
âIf you need Sun Horse again,â he said, âI will be in the saloon.â
âWhich one?â Clint asked.
The Cherokee shrugged and said, âAll of them.â
Clint watched as the man rode away, then shrugged himself and continued on to the sheriffâs office.

Sheriff Ted Hackett looked at Clint as he came in the door.
âFind Sun Horse?â
âI did, thanks.â
âHe get the job done for you?â
âYes, he did.â
Hackett had been standing at the gun rack when Clint entered. Now he turned and seated himself behind his desk.
âWhat else can I do for you?â
âTell me about a man named Fontaine.â
âPete Fontaine?â
âThatâs the one.â
âPete Fontaine is a man nobody wants to cross,â Sheriff Hackett said, ânot even the Gunsmith.â
âWell,â Clint said, âmaybe you can elaborate on that for me?â
Hackett opened his bottom drawer and came out with a bottle of whiskey.
âThisâll take a drink,â he announced.
TWENTY
âFontaine is a gambler,â Hackett said. âAnd I donât just mean that he plays poker or bets on horses. He gambles with his whole life. And the chances he takes always pay off.â
âSo heâs a businessman.â
âYes,â Hackett said, âbut he takes that to the next level.â
âIs he dangerous?â
âHeâll do anything to make money.â
âAnything?â
âI mean anything.â
âSo why would he have a man watching me?â Clint asked. âIt was more likely he was watching Whirlwind.â
âIs that what Sun Horse found out for you?â
âHe tracked the man to the Fontaine ranch.â
âDid you talk to Fontaine?â
âNo,â Clint said, âI wanted to get your take on him first.â
âMy take,â Hackett said, âis that heâs always up to something.â
âIâll keep that in mind. Thanks.â
As Clint walked to the door, Hackett asked, âYou gonna go and talk to him now?â
âNo,â Clint said. âIâm going back to the Canby place first.â
âGood,â Hackett said. âTalk to Ben about Fontaine.â
âAre they friends?â
âThey are definitely not friends,â the sheriff said.
âI see.â
âAnd be careful if you go to Fontaineâs place,â Hackett said. âWatch your back. Fontaine employs men who are good with a gun.â
âAnybody in particular?â Clint asked.
âFella named Blacker.â
âNever heard of him.â
âThatâs his biggest asset,â Hackett said. âNobodyâs ever heard of him.â
âOkay,â Clint said. âThanks for the information.â
âBut do me a favor, will you?â
âWhatâs that?â
âTry not to kill anybody in my town,â Hackett said. âAt least, not until after the Derby.â
âIâll give it my best shot.â
*Â *Â *
Blacker entered Peter Fontaineâs office. His boss looked up.
âWhat have you got?â
âWord from town.â
âAbout what?â
âAdams tracked me from the Canby place to here.â
âWell, how did that happen?â
