short, dark-skinned mandressed in a blue shirt and black pants. âHi, Lieutenant Dunne,â Nancy called.
âOh, hi, everyone,â he said, walking up to the three girls. âMeet Eddie McCormack. Heâs setting up phone taps. If any more phone threats come in, we can trace the call and get the voice on tape. Come on, Eddie, letâs check with the front switchboard.â
âLieutenant Dunne,â Nancy said, stopping him. âCan I talk to you for a second?â
âIf itâs about that marker, I donât know a thing yet,â he said. âThe lab is a little backed up. I should hear something by tomorrow morning.â
âItâs not about that,â Nancy explained.
The lieutenant sighed a little impatiently and leaned against the wall.
âThere was a break-in at Susanâs apartment last night, the place where George and I are staying.â
Lieutenant Dunne became instantly alert. âWhat did they take? Why didnât you call right away?â
âItâs not what they took,â Nancy said. âItâs what they leftâa broken mirror and a note warning me off the case.â
âShook you up a little, huh?â he said.
Nancy smiled. âNot exactly, but you might want to send someone over there to dust for prints. If there are any, theyâd be on the terracedoor. You can get the key from George or Susan.â
âYeah, well, I might just do that,â the lieutenant replied, taking out his notepad and making a note. Then he stood up straight and stuck his pen behind his ear. âI guess I donât have to tell you to be careful. I mean, a famous detective like you.â
There was a touch of humor in his voice, which Nancy noted.
âJust keep in touch, you hear?â Then he headed off in the direction of the switchboard.
âTen minutes to show time,â Susan said from behind Nancy. âHere are your tickets, guys. Enjoy Dr. Helen.â
Nancy and George headed toward the studio, and on the way saw Brenda and Dee talking in one of the offices. Nancy poked her head in. âExcuse me, you two,â she said apologetically. âI know itâs almost show time, but I have a couple of important questions. Do you have a second?â
Brenda checked her watch. âA second,â she said tentatively, âbut thatâs about it.â
âI understand Susan told you about me before I got here. Did either of you repeat that information to anybody?â
Brenda and Dee shared a guilty glance. âWell, we talked about it with Ginger, actually. You know how hard it is to keep a secret,â Brenda said.
âAnd I think I told Midge,â Dee confessed. âI knew I shouldnât tell her, but somehow she wormed it out of me.â
âThanks for your time,â Nancy said. âAnd one other thing, do either of you know anyone in Stern Productions who might have something against Marcy?â
Brenda shook her head. âLieutenant Dunne asked me the same thing yesterday afternoon. But, noâeveryone here is nuts about Marcy.â
âThatâs right,â Dee agreed. âWe all love her to pieces.â
âEven Jack Cole?â Nancy prodded.
âEspecially Jack,â Dee said with a little laugh. âHeâs got a crush on her, if you ask me. They go way back. Itâs like heâs appointed himself her watchdog or something. Always looking out for her. Why would he do anything to hurt her?â
âWell, the other day, he seemed a little annoyed with her,â Nancy said. âHe called her Queen Marcy, for one thing.â
âOh, thatâs just his sense of humor,â Brenda explained. âHeâs a little strange that way. But he cares about her a lot.â
âWell, thanks,â Nancy told them. âI donât want to keep you any longer. Have a great show. Come on, George.â With a wave, Nancy led George into the studio where
