arm. Even though the dog was already grumbling out his woes in Radleyâs ear and allowing Josh to pet him, Hester wasnât convinced.
âI donât imagine heâs used to children.â
âHe fools around with kids in the park all the time.â As if to prove it, Taz rolled over to expose his belly for stroking. âAdded to that is the fact that heâs bone lazy. He wouldnât work up the energy to bite anything that hadnât been put in a bowl for him. You arenât afraid of dogs, are you?â
âNo, of course not.â Not really, she added to herself. Because she hated to show a weakness, Hester crouched down to pet the huge head. Unknowingly she hit the perfect spot, and Taz recognized a patsy when he saw one. He shifted to lay a paw on her thigh and, with his dark, sad eyes on hers, began to moan. Laughing, Hester rubbed behind his ears. âYouâre just a big baby, arenât you?â
âAn operatorâs more like it,â Mitch murmured, wondering what sort of trick heâd have to do to get Hester to touch him with such feeling.
âI can play with him every day, canât I, Mitch?â
âSure.â Mitch smiled down at Radley. âTaz loves attention. You guys want to take him for a walk?â
The response was immediate and affirmative. Hester straightened up, looking doubtfully at Taz. âI donât know, Rad.â
âPlease, Mom, weâll be careful. You already said me and Josh could play in the park for a little while.â
âYes, I know, but Taz is awfully big. I wouldnât want him to get away from you.â
âTaz is a firm believer in conserving energy. Why run if strolling gets you to the same place?â Mitch went back into his office, rooted around and came up with Tazâs leash. âHe doesnât chase cars, other dogs or park police. He will, however, stop at every tree.â
With a giggle, Radley took the leash. âOkay, Mom?â
She hesitated, knowing there was a part of her that wanted to keep Radley with her, within armâs reach. And, for his sake, it was something she had to fight. âA half hour.â The words were barely out when he and Josh let out a whoop. âYou have to get your coatsâand gloves.â
âWe will. Come on, Taz.â
The dog gave a huge sigh before gathering himself up. Grumbling only a little, he stationed himself between the two boys as they headed out.
âWhy is it every time I see that kid I feel good?â
âYouâre very kind to him. Well, I should go upstairs and make sure they bundle up.â
âI think they can handle it. Why donât you sit down?â He took advantage of her brief hesitation by taking her arm. âCome over by the window. You can watch them go out.â
She gave in because she knew how Radley hated to be hovered over. âOh, I have my office number for you, and the name and number of his doctor and the school.â Mitch took the paper and stuck it in his pocket. âIf thereâs any trouble at all, call me. I can be home in ten minutes.â
âRelax, Hester. Weâll get along fine.â
âI want to thank you again. Itâs the first time since he started school that Radâs looked forward to a Monday.â
âIâm looking forward to it myself.â
She looked down, waiting to see the familiar blue cap and coat. âWe havenât discussed terms.â
âWhat terms?â
âHow much you want for watching him. Mrs. Cohenââ
âGood God, Hester, I donât want you to pay me.â
âDonât be ridiculous. Of course Iâll pay you.â
He put a hand on her shoulder until sheâd turned to face him. âI donât need the money; I donât want the money. I made the offer because Radâs a nice kid and I enjoy his company.â
âThatâs very kind of you, butââ
