water, and then going home.
I was particularly anxious to talk with Joe about his new caseâand his new partner.
âDid you ask Olivia what she thinks about the Bone Man appearing out of nowhere?â Elsie put on her purple hat and picked up her bag.
âWhat about the Bone Man?â Oliviaâs whole body shuddered. âHe wasnât so bad. I just donât ever want to go out there again.â
âIâm not planning on going out there,â I assured her. âIâve been seeing him here.â
The expression on Oliviaâs face was simple this timeâhorror. âMolly, I canât believe heâs your type. And what about Joe? This is too much.â
Dorothy frowned at me. âIs that a good idea? I mean, I havenât met the Bone Man, but Joe is such a nice person. And what about Mike? How is he going to take this?â
I ignored her question about my son and what heâd think about the Bone Man. âIâm not dating him. I saw him in my bedroom this morning after coming out of the closet. I saw him here in the supply closet. Thatâs why I dropped the dustpan.â
âYou mean heâs
appearing
to you?â Olivia asked. âThatâs odd. Iâve never heard of him reaching out to anyone. Have you, Elsie?â
âNo. Never.â Elsie adjusted her bag on her shoulder.âMaybe it has something to do with your motherâs amulet that you started wearing. You remember, he was very keen on it when we were out there last time.â
I fingered the amulet. âMaybe thatâs it.â
âOr maybe heâs in trouble,â Olivia said. âMaybe you should check on him, Molly. What if he needs help and youâre the only one he can connect with?â
âI think
you
should go, Olivia. You know him so well,â I suggested.
âNo. Not me. He hasnât been appearing to me anyway, Molly. I think he wants
you
.â
âThis is the Bone Man weâre talking about,â I reminded her. âWe donât randomly stop in at Oak Island with a Bundt cake and ask him how heâs doing.â
âBut what if Mom is right?â Dorothy added. âIf he were anyone else, youâd help him.â
Elsie giggled. âSounds like a road trip.â
CHAPTER 7
Teach me what I need to know,
Show me truth and light.
I fear no evilâno remorse.
Gird me for the fight.
Dorothy was excited by the idea of finally meeting the Bone Man. That was only because sheâd never met him. I felt sure sheâd be as frightened of him as the rest of us once she laid eyes on him.
âIâll just wait at the house tomorrow until you girls come back.â Olivia went out the door with Dorothy, who was carrying her staff. âIâve spent all the time I want out there. Just be careful. We know the Bone Man can be tricky. Donât let him take your amulet with some kind of shady deal, Molly.â
âIâm not entirely convinced this is the right thing to do.â I locked the shop door behind us, and we headed to our cars. âHow would we approach him? The only reason witches visit him is to trade for knowledge or items we need for spells.â
âWhy canât we just say weâre checking on him because you had visions of him?â Dorothy unlocked her brown Beetle.
âI canât imagine saying that to him.â Elsie shrugged asshe got into my car. âBut Molly was pretty good with him last timeâexcept for letting him have Olivia.â
âDonât remind me,â Olivia called out. âDorothy, make sure you leave my staff at home when you go.â
Elsie laughed. âI thought you had a good time with him, Olivia.â
âI dated a weredragon once too,â Olivia said. âWe donât want to go into all my mistakes.â
âIâm sure weâll think of something,â Dorothy decided cheerfully. âShould I bring my magic
