and the good work they were doing had inspired him.
Chapter 6
Jacob included Vivienne in his plans, and in his life, which meant a lot to her. His lifestyle was unique, so she had to adapt. Traveling, and having the opportunity to see other countries, had not been possible before. Now it was, and Vivienne was grateful.
More than seeing new places and learning about the world, Vivienne was flattered to share such things with Jacob. He didn’t hesitate to take her along, which was promising. Soon she would be on her way to Italy with him, and the prospect excited her.
When she told Lana, her friend said, “I am so jealous.” But she had a smile on her face and gave Vivienne a big hug. “You have to tell me everything when you get back.”
Lana and Trace were really an item now, seeing each other frequently. Vivienne was pleased about that. She couldn’t be happier for her friend. Even though Trace had a reputation for short-term relationships, he showed no signs of that with Lana.
At the shop, Vivienne’s assistant quickly picked up the projects assigned. Even the first day, Michele provided relief from the barrage at Vee’s. Since that evening was the charity event, Vivienne planned to leave a little early to have more time to get ready. And with Michele’s assistance with the workload, she even found time to call her mother.
Irene had been recovering well. With the nurse’s help, she had been doing her daily exercises and attending physical therapy as instructed. When Vivienne called, her mother was in a good mood. “I’m getting stronger by the day, and I can’t wait to get back to work.”
Vivienne hoped her mother wasn’t being too optimistic, but the sooner she could return to the restaurant, the better for her morale. It had to be difficult staying home so much, although she knew her father picked Irene up for outings. The occasion might be a lunch out, but it went a long way toward boosting her mother’s spirits. Plus, her friends dropped in when they could, too.
She told her mother about going to Italy, and getting the chance to see Jacob’s home in Tuscany. The excitement was contagious. “Oh, how wonderful,” her mother said. “Send me some pictures, and tell me all about it when you get back.”
Now that she’d promoted Michele, it was easier to get away. She’d given her new general manager authorization to hire, allowing her to bring in part-time help, or even another person to work the front. Vivienne trusted her judgment, making it possible to take her attention off the day-to-day operations in the shop.
Vivienne’s father was very supportive, too. Now that he knew Jacob, he had no misgivings about her traveling with him. “Will you be taking the jet?” he said.
“I’m sure we will.” Vivienne got a kick out of how much her dad had enjoyed the private jet. “Maybe when we get back, Jacob will fly you out for a visit.” She got no objection to that suggestion.
For the charity event that evening, Vivienne chose a mint-green lace sheath dress with short sleeves, and paired it with beige leather pumps. Dating Jacob required having outfits ready for almost any occasion, so she’d shopped more often. Lana had been a great help in choosing appropriate attire. Jacob had offered his fashion consultant, but Vivienne hadn’t been up for that yet.
The venue was the rooftop lounge at a Manhattan hotel. It was a pleasant evening, and the clear sky allowed for expansive views. The format of the occasion was cocktails and appetizers, with a presentation to follow. Jacob planned to take her to dinner when it was over. The most delightful part of the evening was meeting his sister Daniela.
She was only five feet four, so Vivienne towered over her. After Jacob introduced them, his sister chatted as if they’d been friends forever. There was nothing pretentious about her. Her dark blond hair flowed in waves, and her hazel eyes had a green or brown hue, depending on the light.
