greeted. âMom there?â
âDuh!â he said. âItâs only afternoon. Sheâs still at work.â
Megan checked the clock. Dad was probably at work, too.
âDonât you want to talk to me?â Zach asked, sounding hurt. âI want to hear all about the school and the zombies and the brains and the ââ
âYou can check all that stuff out for yourself,â she told her brother. âCome a week from Sunday. Itâs Visitorsâ Day.â
âOOOOHHHHH. Zombie Academy! Do we have to wear protective gloves and masks?â
Megan could hear the excitement rising in Zachâs voice. âProbably,â she said.
Zach paused. âI donât mind. Itâs worth it. Can I meet Mr. Jones?â
âHow do you know about him?â Megan asked.
âIâve been reading about your disease and the school,â Zach told her. âDid you know Mr. Jones opened the California Castle in 1908?â
âI had no idea it was that old,â Megan admitted. She started to do the math to figure out how old Mr. Jones must be, but Zachâs mind was leaping at rocket speed. âDr. Shelley might want to come to visit, too. I mean, she diagnosed your disease and wrote a book about monsters. Can I bring her? Can I? Can I?â He interrupted her thoughts.
âSure,â Megan agreed, just to get him to stop. Dr. Shelley was very old and had long gray hair.âWe can pretend sheâs our grandmother if anyone asks.â
âAwesome!â Zach told her he was going to write a scene for his movie that took place at the school and bring his video camera. âWhat time should we be there?â Zach asked.
Megan checked her notebook. Maybe she should have gone to Mr. Jones after allâ¦. She didnât know. âJust come in the morning and stay all day.â
âCool!â Zach said. He rattled off an itinerary for his day on campus, and plans for shots he wanted to get on video. Megan wasnât sure who was more excited about Visitorsâ Day, her or her brother. She was about to hang up when Zach asked, âHave you met any kids who like being zombies?â
âWhat are you talking about?â Megan replied. âWhoâd want to be a zombie?â
âWhen I was reading about the school, it said that some people like having zombitus and donât want to be cured. I just wondered if you met anyone like that.â
âOf course not,â Megan said. âThat would be crazy.â Zach really was monster obsessed. She didnât feel like talking to him anymore. âTell Mom and Dad to come next Sunday.â
âSave me some brain soup,â Zach said as he hung up.
Megan called Rachel next.
Sheâd just told her about Visitorsâ Day when Rachel asked, âDid you hear about Brett?â
âHear what?â Megan didnât know what Rachel was talking about.
âYouâll see,â Rachel said, then fell silent.
âSee what?â
Rachel didnât answer.
âDoes everything have to be a mystery?â Megan asked. âCome on. Tell me the news.â
âTo-mor-row,â Rachel said, stressing each syllable.
âOh, fine.â Megan gave up. âIâll wait, but you have to come to Visitorsâ Day next Sunday.â
Megan could hear Rachelâs smile through the phone. âYou couldnât keep me away,â Rachel said.
Â
âMegan Murry, please come to the nurseâs office.â
Megan hadnât even known the school had an intercom system. Her name rang out and echoed down the hall.
âYouâd better get going,â Happy said. âItâs irritating. Theyâll keep calling you over and over untilyou answer. Just in case youâve forgotten your own name.â
âGot it.â Megan rushed to the elevator.
It was Wednesday. Rachel had said something would happen today. Something about Brett Hansen. Maybe there
