itâs wrong to keep me with him because he hasnât got the money to look after me properly, and yet heâs ashamed of not marrying me.â
âIâm a bastard,â said Chick.
âI donât know what to say to you,â said Colin.
He was so happy that this grieved him more than it would have done at any other time.
âIt certainly isnât the money,â said Chick. âItâs Alyssumâs parents who donât want me to marry her â and theyâllget their way. Thereâs a story like that in one of Heartreâs books.â
âItâs a fabulous book,â said Alyssum. âHave you read it, Colin?â
âIsnât that just like you!â said Colin. âThatâs where the real trouble is. Iâm sure all your money still goes on old Heartre.â
Chick and Alyssum let their noses dangle in shame.
âOnly mine,â said Chick. âAlyssum doesnât spend anything on Heartre any more. She hardly gives him a thought now thatâs sheâs living with me.â
There was a certain element of reproach in his tone.
âI like you better than Heartre,â said Alyssum.
She was nearly in tears.
âYouâre sweet,â said Chick, âand I donât deserve you. But collecting Heartre is my only vice â and, as an engineer, unfortunately I canât afford to have more than one.â
âYouâre breaking my heart,â said Colin. âLetâs hope all your worries will sort themselves out. Undo your serviettes.â
Under Chickâs there was a copy of
Vomition
bound in polecat and skunk, and under Alyssumâs a wide gold ring in the shape of a nausea.
âOh! â¦â gasped Alyssum.
She put her arms round Colinâs neck and kissed him.
âYouâre a pal,â said Chick. âI donât know how I can say thanks. Anyway, you know perfectly well that I canât possibly thank you in the way Iâd like â¦â
Colin was beginning to feel slightly better. And Alyssum was really beautiful that evening.
âWhat perfume are you wearing?â he said. âChloe uses one made from essence of double-distilled orchids.â
âNone at all,â said Alyssum.
âItâs natural,â said Chick.
âItâs terrific! â¦â said Colin. âItâs like the breeze in a forest â a forest filled with streams and squirrels and strange playful little animals.â
âTalk to us about Chloe! â¦â said Alyssum, flattered.
Nicholas brought in the hors dâoeuvres.
âHallo, Nicholas,â said Alyssum. âHow are you?â
âFine,â said Nicholas.
He put the plate on the table.
âArenât you going to kiss me?â said Alyssum.
âBe my guest, Nicholas,â said Colin. âYouâd make me very happy if youâd come and have dinner with us â¦â
âOh! Do â¦â said Alyssum. âCome and eat with us.â
âMr Colin plunges me into confusion, sir,â said Nicholas. âI can hardly sit down at Mr Colinâs table in these clothes â¦â
âListen, Nicholas,â said Colin. âHurry off and change if you must â but Iâm giving you orders to come and have dinner with us.â
âThank you, Mr Colin, sir,â said Nicholas. âIâll go and change then.â
He left the plate on the table and went out. âNow,â said Alyssum, âtell us about Chloe â¦â
âHelp yourselves,â said Colin. âI donât know what it is, but itâs bound to be good.â
âTell us about Chloe! â¦â screamed Chick. âOur tongues are hanging out!â
âIâm going to marry Chloe in a month from today,â said Colin. âAnd, oh, I wish it were going to be tomorrow! â¦â
âYouâre so lucky!â said Alyssum.
Colin felt happy that he was so
