sandwiches and coffee. Please let your people know theyâre available.â
âAppreciate it,â the deputy said. âIâve called San Martin police headquarters for assistance. Theyâre sending two detectives. Theyâll have questions of their own. Now, who found the body?â
âI did,â I replied.
âHas anyone else been in the room since the body was found?â Deputy Stanton asked.
âI believe Iâm the only one,â Hensley said. âKelly unlocked the door for me but didnât go in again.â
âWho has keys to the room?â Deputy Stanton asked.
Hensley went to the cabinet behind her. âThere are three keys for every room. The guest has one, oneâs on the master board, and a third one on the key ring.â She pulled out the round wire holding the room keys and located the one to Sylviaâs room.
I chimed in. âDeputy Stanton, I gave you the one I used. Itâs the master board key. I saw Sylviaâs key on her bed.â
He pulled the metal skeleton key from his pocket. âA duplicate could be made, but it wouldnât be easy, and itâd take time.â He looked at the manager. âHow long had Mrs. Porter been here?â
âTwo days,â she replied.
âDid she request a specific room before she arrived?â
Hensley pulled Sylviaâs file toward her. âNot to my knowledge. Iâll check her records and ask the registration staff.â
He turned to me and opened his notepad. âWhat time did you discover the body?â
âShortly before one oâclock.â
âWhen did you last see Mrs. Porter alive?â
âA little before eleven thirty when she left with her tea.â
âTell me what you saw when you entered the room.â
I told him about going there at Sylviaâs request, having to get a key when she didnât respond, and what I saw as I entered the room.
âI thought sheâd fallen asleep. I went to wake her, and thatâs when I noticed what I thought was a brooch on her shoulder.â
âWhy would you think that?â
âThe room was dim because sheâd lowered the shades. I saw what I thought was a dark red flower with a pearl in the center.â
He frowned at me. âDescribe the pearl.â
âIt was egg-shaped and was in the center of... what I now know is blood.â
He snapped his book closed. âCome with me.â The deputy inclined his head in the direction of the hallway.
No, not again. I didnât want more images of her lifeless body. Once again, I took the long walk to Sylviaâs room.
When we got there, Stanton opened the door and gestured me in. My feet felt like they were blocks of lead. Sylviaâs body seemed to have slouched more into the chair.
âYou said you saw a pearl. Where?â
I looked at the image in the mirror. There was no pearl. I stepped closer and peered at Sylviaâs shoulder. There was the red burst of blood but nothing else.
âIt was there, a large, egg-shaped pearl . . .â I talked faster. âIâm positive. I saw it. I thought it was a piece of jewelry.â
âSlow down, Ms. Jackson,â Stanton said. âTell me about what happened after you left the room.â
âI locked the door, called nine-one-one, and went to Mrs. Hensley. We came back because she wanted to see the situation for herself. When she came out, I locked the room again, and as we went downstairs, we heard you arrive. You were the next person in the room.â
âLetâs talk with Mrs. Hensley.â
The deputy and I didnât speak as we returned to the office.
Deputy Sheriff Stanton stood in front of the managerâs desk. âMrs. Hensley, Iâd like you to describe what you saw on Mrs. Porterâs shoulder where the injury is.â
âA bloodstained area appearing to be about five inches in diameter,â she replied. âI have no idea
