GRACIE AND RALPH faced each other in the Command Post trailer, both with arms crossed, feet apart.
âI got an earful from Whitney,â Ralph said, the heavy black eyebrows merging into a single line.
âI figured.â
âShe quit the team.â
âI figured.â
âBecause of you.â
âI figured. Maybe thatâs not such a bad thing. I know we need everyââ
âShe said you cursed at her.â
â
What!
â Gracie spluttered. âI did not.â She picked the stale wad of gum out of her mouth and flung it into the wastebasket. âShe just . . . made that up.â
âSo she was lying?â
âYes!â
Ralph studied her for a moment, his face expressionless, revealing nothing.
âAs I tried to tell you earlier,â Gracie said. âShe showed up here totally ill prepared. Hellâs bells, she was wearing stupid wedgy-type sandals! She didnât want to hoof it door-to-door.â
âOkay. Iâm going to take you at your word.â
âWell, gee. Thank you,â she said, resisting the temptation to add, âThatâs mighty big of you since weâre supposed to be friendsâ or âI would think so since youâve known me foryears and Iâve never lied to you before,â or a half-dozen smart-alecky rejoinders designed to bleed off some of the hurt and indignation.
âHowever . . .â
âI knew I wasnât off the hook yet.â
âYouâre a senior member of this team.â
âI know.â
âYou know better than to go out on your own.â
âYeah. I know. Iâm duly chastised.â
âYou think this is a joke?â
Gracieâs face grew hot. She could feel the flush creeping up her neck. âNo. I donât think this is a joke.â
âWhat do you think would happen if everyone went off hotdogging on their own?â
âI know, Commander Hunter.â
Ralph ignored her tone and the use of his formal title. âThere are any number of reasons why itâs unacceptable.â
âI
know
.â
âIt breaks down chain of command. I could lose track of you in the field. Then weâd have to go searching for you instead. If you got hurt in some way, there might be no way for you to radio in.â
âAll right already.â
âDo you think the rules donât apply to you?â
âOf course they do. If this really is what youâre mad at me about, then I get it. Iâm sorry. It was unprofessional. It wonât happen again.
If
this is really what youâre mad at me about. But if youâre still mad at me because I hurt you, then can we please not pretend itâs about stupid Whitney or the search and just talk about it?â
Ralph dropped his head so Gracie couldnât see his eyes.
âI miss you, Ralphie,â she said, her voice cracking. âWeâre best friends. Can we please start acting like it?â
She looked back up at Ralph, who had lifted his head again and was looking at her with something as close to extreme pain as she had ever seen in the blue-gray eyes.
Then he turned around with his back squarely to her and began rolling up the laminated map. âWeâre through here,â he said.
âHey! No, weâre not âthrough here.ââ
âYes, we are.â He dropped the rolled-up map into its cardboard tube and pounded the plastic end cap in place with the palm of his hand.
âWhat the hell? Youâre . . . dismissing me? Why are you treating me this way?â
âIâm not treating you any way.â
âYes, you are. Youâre acting like a jerk.â
Ralph turned around to face her again, his face mottled red. âEverything, all the time, is not about you.â
âWhat theââ
